This game is fun when you can log in. I just started playing less than 2 weeks ago and my free game time is up in another 13 or 15 days. However for the last 7 I can barely log into the game due to server overcrowding which limit severely your ability to select servers, log in or even open the game with 2002 errors. I have sat in queues as long as 5000 people only to be Disconnected at the last moment to then have to fight through the 2002 errors and another 5000 queue. I realize they will eventually fix this, as well as an new expansion just launched, but that is little concern to me since its eatting up my free gametime with the prospect of having to then pay for this poor preforming server issue. I just want to play with my friends, but that seems unlikely! Shame as before the new launch it was a fun game to play. Probably the best MMO currently on the market even, but who knows. Who can actually play right now?
Look I get Covid, I get the whole Blizzard meltdown has a huge influx of people, I get supply shortages, I get new expansion, and honestly if I wasn't paying for server fee I wouldn't care. But reality is... They are charging, for a product that a lot can't even play. And in my case I just bought the entire game and all of its expansions. I received a whole 30 days trial, but wont get to use much of it. Then have to play! That is disingenuous at best fraudulent at worst, likely somewhere in between.
This is a critical time for this game to expand its player base and this is NOT going to sit well with other new players who simply want to sit back and hangout with their friends, but cant even make a character on the same servers. MMOs are not fun playing alone.
And they have been warning about this issue since July. You had the option of also not buying the game now and wait until these issues are fixed. They have time and time again over the last months warned players that the server congestion is most likely going to be extremely severe at EW launch, what they try to do about it and what they simply cannot do about it at the moment. You could have heeded these warnings and wait with buying the game but you did not. They are already refunding 7 free days of game time for this (and the possibility of more compensation is still on the table if this keeps going), disabled housing auto demolition, and they even put their development server hardware into making the queue a little less pain (less 2002 error).
I do understand the disappointment but sometimes things just suck and considering how they've informed players well in advance about these issues as well as still keeping everyone updated, I think the responsibility of whether or not someone wants to pay for the game falls on the player. If they didn't do all that; sure, I would want refunds and/or free game time. However, they have provided the players with all the information they could possibly need to make an informed decision when purchasing the game, and it is not their fault some people ignored all that and/or regret their decision now.
You're assuming I was a current player, but if you followed any earlier posts you would know warning in July had no baring on this conversation as I literally started playing 14 days ago. In that time I still havent been able to make a character on the desired server. I have been trying all 14 days. Heck yesterday you couldn't make a character on ANY aether server. I'm glad you are content with this performance. Honestly I am, however, I expect more from any game that charges a monthly fee. Call it standards, if you are going to charge people to play your game with a monthly fee, you darn well better make sure they can. Meanwhile, I continue trying to make my character 2 weeks after I bought the game so maybe one day I can play with my friends. Or I could continue playing a character alone on a server by myself. If I am allowed to even make a character. I can live through queues, thats part of gaming. But I can't even get to the queues.... The game literally WONT LET NEW PLAYERS MAKE CHARACTERS even at off peak time. At least not when I have tried. Which includes Very early morning hours, 1-4am morning time 8-12 and after that it's impossible. So you can discount all you want my experience but I will venture to guess I am not alone simply by the numerous comments saying similar things.
You're not alone, for sure. Neither am I. The amount here isn't relevant. And I said SINCE July, not just July. They've been talking about this time and time on the live letters and on the website since then up until now. I do get that new players may not check those out but regardless, they did provide the information. I believe that the consumer has some responsibilities over the way they spend their money as well, and that providers of a service shouldn't always be held any more accountable over things out of their control than the consumer. They have done everything they could and given us all the information: whether we choose to check it out or use it, that's on us.
That being said, I didn't mean to say you're not allowed to feel frustrated or disappointed: I completely understand! This situation sucks! No one wanted this to be an issue but it is and that's that since nothing can really be done about it now. I do agree that an option to stop the free 30-day period in your case could be called for, but like I mentioned, they are already giving everyone a free week of playtime; possibly more in the future if the situation calls for it. However, I do not think they shouldn't be allowed to sell the game or the subscription as there are still tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of people playing the game every day. It's not like the game is entirely inaccessible for all even if it's less so at the moment.
Hope you'll be able to create your character soon though! It's getting less and less congested by the day (excluding the weekends) and you'll get your chance at some point sooner or later. During the week before the launch your odds were probably better than for the next couple of weeks though.
