Pick whatever and just take it all in as you go, no guides needed. The server you pick hasn't mattered since expansions ago in 2015 when they introduced cross realm functionality.

From what I understand, Light is where most of the end game raiding scene is at if you're at all interested in end game. With that said, it doesn't really matter which data center you choose. You can visit any server/data center at any time and all servers within a data center are cross server functionality with the duty finder/party finder.

my first and only tip for you is to never set foot in the steam discussions again if you plan on playing this game. literally nothing productive goes on here

Light has far more players in it and is often the high end raiding data center
For new players it really doesn't matter and not to mention that you can always swap a server or do a "data center travel"
If you decide to give XIV a go, I suggest to go to the official website and go from there.

The reason I say this cause over there you have a chance to play the game for free until you reach level 70(with some limitations of course)

That way, you can take your time and determine whatever it's worth buying the latest expansions/sub or not.

Free trial is on Steam too, I'm not sure why you say that.

I will still recommend the non-steam version sicne it's another layer of connection required. If you can't connect to Steam for whatever reason you can't play the game even if the game's server are live.

I checked the Steam store to make sure and yes, you're right about that. The only difference is you get a 30 day free trial when at the official site, it's free until you reach level 70.

I suppose 30 days is enough to determine whether OP likes it or not, but if you're not rushing to reach a certain level, the one I mentioned above seems to be a better deal. I could very much be wrong though.

I realized my mistake. What I mentioned was the info I read from XIV on Steam. I didn't bother to click the info involving the XIV free trial version which states exactly what you said there.

Thank you for correcting me. For that, gonna give you points for being patient/civil and such.

Calm down, don't rush, and enjoy the ride. If you get frustrated, take a break for a day.
It's been said ad nauseam: it takes a while to get good. You're gonna spend a few days doing fetch quests with 2 skills, and that's okay.
I've been playing off-and-on for more than 2000 hours over 6 years and I still haven't hit endgame for any expansion as it's main content. You'll never find a lack of anything to do, don't rush the story, enjoy the ride.

i noticed all of the peoples profiles are private, even 50 discussions back, is this the reason? some people sent 1k+ hours in a game they regret? any reasons for those? i would assume obviously only the hardcore gamers would browse the steam discussions

You mean their Steam profiles?

A lot of people keep their profiles private or for Friends only. I assume it's mostly those that frequent different community forums, talk stupid ♥♥♥♥ and troll and don't wanna be personally harassed on their profile or to have people scrutinize them closer. You know.. taking solace in your anonymity - one of the greatest failures of the internet age.

Speaking for myself, my profile is semi-public. The only things being private are my friends list, the amount of time spent on the games I own, and the option to prevent anyone from commenting on my page.

None of the games I own had reached the 1k mark(the only game close to that was ESO with 800+ hours) There are at least two games I regret buying, but other than that, I consider myself a casual gamer who is recently participating in the forums and sharing experiences/opinions/help with other like-minded folk.
