Honestly an issue I have with Viper in general and a reason I won't ever see myself using merged combo buttons if that ever becomes a thing is that I just don't know what I'm doing most of the time when it comes to the regular GCD.
Yeah, of course I'm aware why I'm pressing the combo buttons but outside of peeking what the flashing icon is I don't really get to anticipate what I have to press next, and it makes it harder to also get a proper feel for Death Rattle.
At least with jobs like Samurai I feel more deliberate with what buttons I'm pressing for my combo, and for Pictomancer it's not a huge deal because I don't care if im casting fire or aero or something.
I used to think BLM's gauge was bad because it was so busy, but VPR is not only difficult to parse but just following the trailing ants on your abilities does the same thing but a billion times clearer.
I'm not usually so hard on the dev team, but that sh!t is straight trash. How it got out of conceptualization let alone QA is a mystery.
Also, the sword gauge? It's kind of pointless, so honestly just ignore it because your left/right combo order are static now. The only thing that matters are the diamonds for uncoiled fury and your serpent gauge for going into reawakening. The swords themselves are completely pointless since all the info you need automatically lights up on your hotbar.
As for death rattle. Its your finisher after each full combo and its useable outside of the global cool down. Just use it immediately in between your global's. Don't over think it, just hit the button and continue on into your next combo to build up your serpent gauge.
The way the combos worked at launch were not static as each string gave specific buffs/debuffs, so while not great, the swords actually served some purpose. When they simplified your two combos to be static, the swords became pointless. I'm not really sure why they left the gauge alone after the updated combo design.

That's fair. I think it's aesthetically pretty busy, trending a little close to ugly for me personally, but the information is definitely all there and relatively concise. That's more than can be said for VPR which is both ugly and useless lol
VPR swords gauge is....ya, just useless. Not really sure why it exists still.
Not every MMO but FF14, because your jobs “rotation” aka. mini game accounts for 80% of the PvE mechanics.
That’s why they’re not getting rid of the godawful 1-2-3s and positionals, because if they would the game would actually cross the line into mobile territory.
