That is always the case, so yes.
I haven't played FFXIV in about 3 years I believe now. But when I played during Shadowbringers the community was truly amazing. Kind people everywhere, in dungeons when you were new and mentioned, people took you actively under their wing for the run beyond. Sure there was an a-hat every so often but they were so darn rare.
It all started to go to sh*t shortly after Endwalker released imo, toxic trolls all over the place, targeted harassment of RP people (I wasn't one of em but saw people started to complain in the FC I was in)... it started when the WoW kiddies started to flood the servers, at least that's my experience on it.
I left, nothing left to do because the content became insanely stale and very uninspired and the community going to sh*t... yeah. I feel for you OP I really do, I wish you could have started the game like I did in a healthy and helpful community. My best advice is to find a FC and interact with people within that FC or look for greener pastures MMO wise.
You can thank how hyper sensitive and easily offended people are, along with draconian moderation efforts. That type of environment incentivizes people to form cliques of like-minded people to interact with. The whole internet has basically became that.
I remember playing MMORPGs over a decade ago, and thinks were a lot more social. Sure, there was trolling and flaming, but moderation was more lax, which encouraged discussion outside of echo chambers.
As far as I know, FFXIV still has a 3 strikes policy, 3 bans and your account is nuked. Why risk socializing with some rando if they might be easily offended, then you end up with 1/3 strikes? You're better off just not saying anything at all to random people, and only sticking with your own clique of people.
This is why some FCs literally won't take RPers. RPers are given a bad rep, often assumed to be (E)RPers, aka random gooning incels, aka 30 year old dudes with no life outside of paying a sub to goon in a video game. I get that these sorts are a minority, but it gives the whole community a bad rep nonetheless.
For this reason, I am 100% in support of Yoshida eliminating 3rd party launchers like Dalamud, and coming up with a way to check if the game's data has been modified in any way, including texture mods. I propose an outright declaration of war on modding, it's been hinted to, I say Yoshida should just grow a pair of grapefruits and DO IT. If they lose a ton of subs, then we'll know for a fact and not just mere speculation that the FFXIV community was filled with a bunch of gooning degenerates.
