FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

Low fps on high end laptop
I have legion pro 7 with a 4080 and a i9 13900, playing at 2560 x 1600. I tested it in congested areas like Limsa and in areas where there's no one around. It fluctuates constantly between 50 fps and up to 100 fps. I do not have thermal throttling as the temps sit at 85-88. The gpu is at near 100% usage while the cpu is at barely 20%.
I also tested with a friend which also has a legion with 3060 and lower end cpu and stood in the same spot, looking in the same direction and having the same settings and they have constant 90-100 fps.
I can't figure out what's going on.. I also tried a fresh install but it's the same

This is normal for all of us. FPS drop to half when entering Limsa :dealwithit:

Even in places like Horizon, i still have the same fps as in limsa. My friend which has a lower end laptop with the max settings like mine, has double the frames even in limsa

Is your friend playing it at 2560x1600 too?

they play on full hd only, ofc i know the resolution matters a lot, it's just that even on the lowest settings possible on 2560x1600 i still have lower fps than my friend on full hd max settings. I don't think it should be the case considering the big difference in specs

right click the game .exe "ffxiv_dx11.exe" go to properties and disable the "fullscreen optimisation" you might loose auto HDR doing that but disabling it improved the game for me in city hubs and on train hunts

your cpu drivers may be outdated or even your bios, those 2 things alone can kill fps!

Make sure all drivers for everything is up to date. I have a 4070ti super with a ryzen 9 7950x3d and get around 120 fps at max graphics 2k resolution in fully crowded limsa.

When my bios and cpu were out of date i was getting around 70 fps.

so my fps almost doubled just by updating bios and cpu drivers, although i would use a program like revo-uninstaller to make sure you fully delete the old cpu drivers.

as the old cpu driver files can cause problems with the new files.

It sounds like a software/driver issue, since your specs are good.

Although im not familiar with your cpu so im not sure if it is bottle-necking your gpu or not.

Also in bios make sure XMP is enabled as it allows your ram and cpu to work in tandem and at their fastest.

HOPE these comments help! If you have any other questions im more then happy to answer them! ;)

Where can one find cpu drivers? All I can find are mobo chipset ones.

What kind of cpu do you have? If its intel im not too sure, but im sure youtube would have a video for intel cpus and how to update their drivers.

As for ryzen / amd they have a site (https://www.amd.com/en/support/download/drivers.html) you can search for your exact cpu. If you arent too sure what you are doing i would watch a youtube video as it could help more to see it then words.

If your motherboard bios is out of date i would update that as well, If the bios is really old and outdated.. Just updating the cpu drivers alone may not fix whatever issue you are having. Since both the BIOS and CPU chipsets work in tandem.

Although in order to update your bios, you would need a flash drive.

Say you update all these (GPU drivers , CPU drivers and have the latest BIOS) and you still have FPS issues it might be the windows install itself and might be due for a complete fresh windows install to the newest version of windows 11. Windows can get corrupted files as well, even if that isnt the case just having a really old install wont run as well as a fresh brand new one of the latest version out there.

Windows also is a very important factor to system performance, especially with the newer cpus on the market like with the x3d chips. Stuff like this can get very in-depth, but it all matters.

If you have an x3d chip cpu you will want to be on windows 11, trust me. Even if you don't have an x3d cpu it's still not a bad idea.

Never want to rule out any possibility when it comes to troubleshooting stuff like this.

I found the problem. It was a bios problem. It was a setting that was on for some reason. It was something affecting the performance default / extreme and it was set to extreme. My thermals were still good under 90 even on the extreme mode but after i switched it to default everything went back to normal. Thanks for the help

Sweet! Glad the issue is resolved, i know how annoying low fps can be.. especially if you have high-end specs lmao.

There are so many factors ppl dont even realize that is more then just.. having good components ;) Like in your case a few bad bios settings can hurt everything.

Have a good day!

Sorry for the notifications, i kept switching stuff around and it seems like switching from dgpu mode to hybrid also increased my fps somehow
