once you buy you can no longer play for free via trial so buyer beware. answer is yes though.
even if you dont play mmos/stick to your main mmo after 14, you're looking at 100s of hours of top tier FF until you reach dawntrail which is the beleaguered expansion. and its really not 'bad' let alone so bad you should altogether avoid ff14 bc of it. its just not especially great either.
It has some good content but hasn't had good story since Shadowbringer ended, Endwalker & most recent story (Dawntrail) are atrociously bad.
It went to ♥♥♥♥ during the previous expansion Endwalker, although the decline started way earlier.
Sincerely, a player with more than 10k hours who unsubbed shortly before Dawntrail released
dawntrail is simply a second A Realm Reborn.
"the start of a story is always boring before it reaches its peak".
like dawntrail is really boring due to all the introductions (like it is in ARR) then builds the pillars for the introduced characters etc. (just like in ARR). the only difference here is that you have atleast one 90+ class so you dont need to deal with the snail combat between lv 1~50.
anyways, with that said.
liek i wrote already, dawntrail is like ARR because its a new story arc. so, you might need to suffer (when you reach that point xD) through a 2nd ARR until around lv 97 or so ^^''
hopefully the next expansion will not be like this, otherwise will FF14 get serious problems. peoples are just not used to experience the start of a new story, it must be in an instant go from 0 to 180.
its like in any RPG, it starts slow and boring and then starts to ramp up until it reaches its peak and then it goes a bit back down to more calm (story ends). but like i said, i guess peoples which play too many games nowadays do not understand how for example a movie starts and ends, its the same aswell but gamers have no time for movies.
anyways, if you dont like story driven games (because FF14 is very focused on it) go and play something else or the ARR patience filter will throw you really fast out since everything is locked behind story progress.
I think the issue that people have with Endwalker is mostly the post MSQ patches and the fact that Endwalker did kinda rush things up to close the first story arc as soon as possible
I do think that 6.0's story was great in general despite some of its shortcomings in terms of pacing.
Also, people seem to dislike Dawntrail not because it is a new story, but because it is a very disappointing one by XIV's standards.
Stop trying to gaslight people into thinking it's because of the reason you mentioned just because you believe Yoshi P's boot to be super tasty.
