It's not free to play. You need to sub to play.

The free trial is free, but with limits like level 70 max and most Stormblood content. You can't play the free trial on an account with a registered game.

It's free to start, and the trial is more than generous, literally hundreds of hours for you to decide if it's worth your money or not.

Just be aware if you do the free trial when dawntrail launches in about a month you will prolly not be able to log in for a month or so since during congestion free players get bumped to the back of the line que wise so you will not be able to log in due to the perma ques on the servers.

The game has a very generous free trial that lets you play almost everything from the base game and first two expansions for an unlimited time, with limits on chat, joining guilds, forming a party and how much money you can hold.

But once you buy the game, you have to pay the monthly fee, you can't go back to the trial.

it has a trial, limited in content and features

if the trial pleases you, you can spend money -- if it doesn't, you leave with nothing wasted but time

please just don't be one of those idiots that confuse a trial with free to play; it's not, and has never been, free to play

it has a 'try before you buy' option, but once it has done its job and you have decided to spend money, you don't get to go back to the trial, and you don't get another free trial without using a different email address. most of the orange julius attendants are not going to give you 12 samples instead of 1 sample and then you have to buy a drink. SE is not your girlfriend working the counter

this is how things with a trial work in pretty much every aspect of retail, but for some reason people seem to think that this ought to work differently and they should be able to stop paying and get it free again -- usually they say this is because free to play games exist? even though that's really not related because this isn't one and the entire monetary scheme is different

Click on this:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/312060/FINAL_FANTASY_XIV_Online_Free_Trial/

Read here too:

Notice: This is a Free Trial that allows you to play free up to level 70 with no restrictions on play time. If you wish to continue beyond level 70, please purchase the full version of the game on Steam. Several game features are restricted for the Free Trial.
The PAL version of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Free Trial will only work on European Square Enix accounts.

That is from the Free Trial page, note it says for me PAL because I am in the PAL region, it may say North American for you.

This game is region locked by both Square Enix Account and the game Software. This means, you must download/buy/upgrade everything in your region, if you choose to play the Steam version, make sure you create a Square Enix account that matches your Steam client region, for example if your live in the EU region your Steam should be EU/PAL, then you must select your country during SE account creation, if your country is not in the country select box, let us know if you're unsure what to use instead, as some countries are excluded.

Also note, if you start the Free Trial on steam, you must then upgrade the game using the steam store. You cannot use Windows PC (SE store) codes with the steam version software, Steam and Windows PC versions are incompatible.

One last thing, if you upgrade the Trial version, then you will need to pay a monthly fee to access the game. The Trial has no time limit, it never expires.

Game servers (Worlds) are not region locked, you can play on any Datacenter you like, only the Account and Software is region locked.

It literally tells you. If you can't even read the store page, you're gonna have a rough time in the game.

Most useless answer ever. Then Valve should close all forums pointing out Google is everybody's friend.
