And while I am here should the code be used in the "Add game time card"?
The PC version and Steam version are 2 seperate things. You say you already have a FFXIV account, so if you want to play on that account, you need to add subscription time onto it from Mog Station from the FFXIV website.
If you buy the Steam version of the game, you are basically buying the whole game again. So basically it's like if you went to a shop and bought 2 copies of FFXIV from it. So if you buy the game from Steam, you will get a code to make a new account with 30 days of play time on it. You can still use your old account, but you will have spent extra money to just have a code for a new account. Also unless you renew your subscription on Mog Station, even if you try to use your old account, you won't be able to play it.

Here is the link to Mog Station. I don't know if it's because I bought the game on Steam or not, but I have an option to pay my subscription with my Steam Wallet. If you want to use Steam Wallet funds to add subscription time, go check if that's also an option with you. Just buy subscription time onto your account and don't buy the whole game all over again unless you have to.

Here's an image of how I can find pay subscription time with Steam Wallet, which you might not be able to do unless you bought the game from Steam.
I only have a lvl 27 character so I could have just made a new account entirely. But then there is the problem with the name of my character as I have already used the name I want.
Side question: The steam and non steam version do share the exact same servers/realms right? (just to be sure)
all platform share the same server. and you can delete your character or delete your old account to use your old name.
