FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

Have Retail CE FFXVI can I buy Heavensward on Steam?
I'm not too fond on SE's handling of expansion packs as they often give you a digital code to download on release but it's a pain to reinstall it later with a new PC.

Is there any way to buy just Heavensward on Steam?

I don't think you'd need to buy Heavensward on steam, just have it registered to your account

I have ffxiv on steam just for the client, I still use my old account from 1.0

GMG has this warning to steam users:
"Please note: The registration code included in this version is not compatible with the Steam version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. To play on Steam, please buy the Steam version of the game once it becomes available."

That really means nothing. If you have a registered copy on your account, you can access it on the Steam client. There's no magical lockout. The only incompatibility is that if you have a Steam version of the game and registered that way, you MUST buy Heavensward via Steam. Retail accounts can use the Steam client just fine.

I do it every day without a problem.

My only worry is that the steam version won't download the expansion files without the expansion on the account. So that means people who bought retail and use the steam client might be missing the files.

The Steam version is actually, bit for bit, the Retail version, it just loads the install client. And for some reason data up until 2.2. As soon as you load it, it downloads up to date files from the same exact server everyone else connects to.

Thing is, it'd be close to impossible for them to really manage an MMO that had a dependant exrta platform on PC just for people who are connected to Steam. You can actually download the retail client and put it in the Steam version's place in the Steam folder and Steam will treat it just like the Steam version because there's no file checking or variations to begin with.

Thanks

@Dexter, just FYI but the version of FF14 on Steam tends to be quite a bit out of date, i.e. once you've installed from Steam, you STILL need to patch the game.

Currently, the Steam download is around 8GB, then you download another 4~5GB to bring the total to slightly under 15GB.

Thanks for the response. I have the old pre-ARR CE for FFXIV and got grandfathered in to the ARR CE. I don't feel like paying another $20 just to have it on steam. So that's where my retail copy is from.

I guess I'll just get it off SE directly and hope for the best.

this is for wanting to upgrade with the expansion, not about using the steam client to play with another account
