GMG has this warning to steam users:
"Please note: The registration code included in this version is not compatible with the Steam version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. To play on Steam, please buy the Steam version of the game once it becomes available."
I do it every day without a problem.
My only worry is that the steam version won't download the expansion files without the expansion on the account. So that means people who bought retail and use the steam client might be missing the files.
Thing is, it'd be close to impossible for them to really manage an MMO that had a dependant exrta platform on PC just for people who are connected to Steam. You can actually download the retail client and put it in the Steam version's place in the Steam folder and Steam will treat it just like the Steam version because there's no file checking or variations to begin with.
Thanks for the response. I have the old pre-ARR CE for FFXIV and got grandfathered in to the ARR CE. I don't feel like paying another $20 just to have it on steam. So that's where my retail copy is from.
I guess I'll just get it off SE directly and hope for the best.
this is for wanting to upgrade with the expansion, not about using the steam client to play with another account
