You farmed for 5000 shards? Ouch... I remember going for Forestreaper title and in 1 hour I only got 800 wind shards.

Get a full Patrician's set and look for a spirit bonding party in the Party Finder. You'll usually be going to Urth's Fount to grind mobs until you spiritbond the Patrician's gear. You then convert the gear into materia, buy another set, and do it some more until you have the gil you need.

You can get your retainers to farm shards for you as well using ventures you make from grinding the fates.

Usually only the gil farmers 'farm' shards. It's that 'grinding' that normal players go insane fast.

-----

Duty Roulette: +gil rewards for being certain 'needed' classes (i.e. tank) / you can only do them once daily.

*tomes can be exchanged for items that can be sold.

Levequests: As above except you get 100 and those regenerate at the rate of 8 daily.

Gathering/Harvesting: This isn't so bad as shards. You can get nearly 100 gil per 'click'. Far better than shards. If you have sufficient gear, you can try for the rare items... but yeah, gil farmers are doing it to.

Spirit-bonding: As the above posts / easier if you bring a healer chocobo and even better if you are a WHM (for Holy) and have three more WHMs (with a chocobo each) in the party.

Retainers: This is kinda flavour of the 'patch'. Right now, if you have a FiSHerman retainer, you can try the 'lottery' in hopes of getting a fat cat. Otherwise... it's a way to get rid of venture coins.

I missed the old days of 1.00 where you zealously guarded a secret recipe of making lvl 48 axe/spear and charge people a hand and a leg for it. Being one of the 5 goldsmith hitting lvl cap the first month on the server helps =P

Get a level 50 crafting class, buy a bunch of the Emperor's New Gear from the vendor in Mor Dhona, then sell it on the marketplace for far more than you bought it for. Dirty as hell, but effective from what I've been told.

The adventurer in need bonus is always available, assuming you fit the role.
The roulette bonus is once a day.
