FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

How do I download the free trial NA version?

Notice: Includes 30 days of free game time for all newly created service accounts.

Monthly subscription required to play.

The PAL version of FINAL FANTASY® XIV: A Realm Reborn™ will require a European & other Regions Square Enix Account to play.

I'm worried that this will download the EUROPEAN version for me, which is like 2x laggier in general than an American server as I live in New Zealand. I live in the Oceanic region so I don't understand why it'd make me download this particular version. It says the PAL version but PAL is basically African and Oceanic, SECAM is what euro uses... So I don't understand why they'd label the European version as "PAL" either.

I want to play with my friend who lives in Canada, and he's on the North American server. I also want to do this officially through steam. I don't want to add a non-steam game through steam just to play with him, I just want full legit support and integration of all these things.

There is only one version of the game. You can choose which server to play on in the game itself. There are no restrictions either, 1 account and 1 client to play on any server. the characters you create are however bound to the server you choose(even for that you can buy an account transfer)
Note it also states the PAL version of the game will do that, not the NTSC. If you're playing in PAL, you need it. The type of account you access from doesn't matter anyway since the servers for the entire game and all regions are located in Montreal, Quebec.

Unless you're in China (http://ff.sdo.com/web6/index/index.html), you have access to all/any servers, i.e. an EU player can play on a NA server. A NA player can play on a JPN server.

PS3 or PS4 on the Playstation Network or Windows (Steam and non-Steam) versions of the game use the same servers. Every one plays on the same servers. There is NO region-specific version of the game (except for China).

List of servers: arrstatus.com (all JPN servers are located in Tokyo, NA/EU servers are in Montreal, Canada) That site lets you see the IP addresses of all the servers, allowing you to ping them to get an idea of your possible connection. SInce you know your friend's server, choose his server for your free trial period. Ask him to give you a recruitment code too.

Steam vs non-Steam. If you buy Steam, you get the usual Steamworks integration/etc but you are also required to buy future DLC/expansions via Steam. Pretty standard stuff. Aside from that... NO DIFFERENCE. If you think that buying the Steam version gives some special advantage, nope. But if you plan on using Broadcast, post reviews/etc... yeah, get the Steam version.

Regions matter basically in terms of the billing currency. So if you have a NA SE Account, you need to buy the NA version of the game and should you use game time cards, be sure to get the NA version. Just three regions (well.. four if you count China as one), NA, EU and JPN.

There is a difference, actually. It's a small one though. Buying the Steam version lets you pay for your game time / other in game purchases via the Steam Wallet.
Billing currency
Yes.
