Yes.

There are a few side dungeons such as Sunken Temple of Qarn and Cutter's Cry that can be unlocked by taking the side quests from specific npc's, but the majority are unlocked through the main story. You also have to complete the main story to access most of the endgame content.

You can always skip the cut scenes if you are not interested in the story by hitting escape during them, but playing through the story gives a lot of exp. so you won't have to grind you first class out to max level.

Yea i know it definitely sucks majorly why i quit 2 months ago, considered going back today but really iffy

doesn't take long and only have to do it once and then a few when a new patch is released, less tedious than the players who abandon dungeons and trials or the oft godbert levels of grinding needed for that kick ass weapon. so yeah if you think a few walkthrough quests are tedious you probably won't like the gameplay that comes after.

No, many of the post level 50 dungeons are not linked to main quest line, approximately 2/3 of the post 50 dungeons in fact.

They may not be linked story wise to the main story, but most of the endgame dungeons require you to be past a certain point in the story to unlock (at least through the Praetorium).

Most of the pre-50 stuff requires the storyline, all endgame content requires you to do the storyline, the upcoming expansion will require you to have done the post-game storyline. If you don't like doing the main storyline then I have some bad news for you.
You also make around 1,5-3 Million Gil until the end of the Mainq (with selling materia), which is more than enough for everything you could need for high lvl stuff.

You later get several materia from the main quest that sold for 300k+ each on my server and our marketplace is flooded with guys who dump down the prices.

The main quest extends for a long time past 50 unless you only count the Umbral Era arc. Once you hit the req.50 quests, reward sale value ramps up tremendously fast while need for gil plummets. After a while at the top, you'll be rolling in bank accidentally.

If you have some crafting and gathering on the side, you'd probably have much more gil than what you have at your current combat-classes level. It's quite easy to set some time aside, repeatedly synth some HQ gear and then sit them on the market board.
