You can always skip the cut scenes if you are not interested in the story by hitting escape during them, but playing through the story gives a lot of exp. so you won't have to grind you first class out to max level.
They may not be linked story wise to the main story, but most of the endgame dungeons require you to be past a certain point in the story to unlock (at least through the Praetorium).
odd cuz im level 31 in main quest and i have barely 100k
You later get several materia from the main quest that sold for 300k+ each on my server and our marketplace is flooded with guys who dump down the prices.
If you have some crafting and gathering on the side, you'd probably have much more gil than what you have at your current combat-classes level. It's quite easy to set some time aside, repeatedly synth some HQ gear and then sit them on the market board.
