FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

So I've been thinking about something for a long time and...
So... What do we actually do in this game? I mean aside from being The Scion's beat stick, delivery boy, and messenger. I mean we watch the Scoin's figure out the solutions to issues. What do we as the Warrior of Light do that, I don't know, Alphinaud couldn't? Most of the game it feels like we stand to the side watching others talk to each other, not even talking to us we're doing little more then ease dropping and when they're done talking to each other they point us at the villain of the week to beat with a stick.

It wasn't until I got to the Endwalker hildibrand quest line that I realized that and I only realized it because for the first time we take the reigns as a character, we aren't following someone else's orders we know what needs to be done and the only reason we get other people involved at all is because we're using them as a map.

We were adventurers who happened to be in the right places in the right time and got scouted to fix problems, problems that would later become something much bigger than we expected. We're basically glorified janitors. :winter2019cooldog:

Oh and some shenanigans about Meteor being Azem so we get plot armor and Venat's blessing.

We're the muscle and the heart of the party with a great destiny: a classic silent jrpg protagonist. You've contributed to discussions, but obviously its never dialogued let alone voiced, usually your mouth just moves or the screen fades to black, or it's three words that makes another character springboard an elaborate heist.

But for the most part, you're there to be big and strong and slay gods, and because you're such a big, strong godslayer, everyone loves you. It's not terribly different from even real bangers like Metaphor.

The fact that it took you "so long" to realize talks of the strenght of the game's setting. Nowadays it's an old formula, but two decades ago your usual mmo experience was that of a nobody trying to make himself a place in the big world and your character was never an equal to the figures of power and big shot NPCs.

In FF 14 you are not even lvl 10 and the game tells you of the Echo. By lvl 20 you have your first primal fight. It's a world that looks up to you to save the day when nobody else can. The WoL is, a shounen protagonist. But even if we are the MC, the game will often put us back to a degree of reality telling/showing us that other characters have their own unique strenght and, even if we are the ones dealing the killing blow, victory was achieved thanks to everyones effort.

But this is an MMO, so the setting and story are still there to serve as links for our next quest, trial and raid. In other words, the gameplay comes first and the story second. This is why we, the players, are given little to no choice of dialogue and action every time the plot calls for it. Hildibrand quests have a different strenght, they are self aware and the tone is purely comical, even our WoL ends up engulfed by the the vibe and does goofy things here and there.

My personal irk, lots of important NPC seems to have strong bonds and some of them even romantic interests but not our WoL, never with our WoL. A thank you and a pat in the back and here's is your (quest)reward. The only spark of romantic interest I've seen so far is at the end of Heavensward with Aymeric. Oh, and a Gladiatrix in the Blacksmith job quests, but she is "in love with our skills".

Tl, Dr: turn on your suspension of disbelief and let the flow go on.

It's more of I've known it for a long time but when I see what can be I finally realize something.

I really don't like being the back seat Main Character that exists to be a beat stick anytime the villain of the week shows you and another reason Dawntrail is such a let down.

We are THE Warrior of Light, we've done so much, we have so much experience and what is our purpose? We're a wrought iron rod used to beat down anything that stands in Wuk Lamat's way so she can say she was the one that brought victory.
