FFXIV Steam – Account Link Issue

I bought Final Fantasy XIV Complete Edition on Steam over a week ago, but I haven’t been able to play even once due to an account linking issue.

I’ve contacted both Steam and Square Enix, but each company keeps passing the responsibility to the other without providing a real solution. Steam says it’s Square Enix’s issue, Square Enix says it’s Steam’s issue, and meanwhile, I still can’t play.

If anyone has experienced a similar issue and found a solution, I’d really appreciate any advice. Also, I’d like to know if others have faced this problem, since it seems like I’m not the only one dealing with it.

Need more context.

What you can't do;
Cannot link a Square Enix account with a different region than your Steam account (some cases you can link, but it will NOT allow you to login), thus the game is stuck in limbo forever and can never be played.

Cannot link a Square Enix account that has a Windows PC version of the game on it.
(You can link it, but again, you cannot ever login and play)

You can only link a brand new Square Enix account with no prior game keys on it, unless it has MAC/Xbox/PlayStation version keys, then you can add EITHER the Steam CD key or the Windows PC key (SE Store/website version of the game).

So it depends on your Square Enix account, is it new or old with other versions of the game already on it?

Thanks for your reply! My Square Enix account was originally created for the free trial (up to level 70), and the only purchase I’ve ever made was FFXIV Complete Edition through Steam. I never bought a Windows version separately, so in theory, my account should be eligible for linking. However, I still can’t log in, as the launcher keeps saying my Steam account isn’t linked correctly.

Do you know if there’s anything else I can check or try?

What happens, when you press the Play button in your Steam library list for this game, does the launcher start up and stay on the login page? if so, what is displayed, is the ID field locked in grey with an ID set (this should be the ID / Username you made for your Square Enix account if linked to your Steam) or is it empty or not the ID you want to use? or is it blank with a white page asking for an ID and password (no link setup at all).

SE still has a very late 90s/early 2000s way of doing things.

You did add your game key in the Mog Station, right? (the key you got from right-click FF 14 > manage > cd keys)
