You are kind of right Nyx. The Astrologian is a job that is from Ishgard. And in the story, Ishgard is locked off until the end of 2.X patches. So you can't get into Ishgard to unlock Astrologian until you finish off all 2.X story quests (You can ignore the side and optional quests).
There is no requirements for the job except to do the quest. This means that you can be any class you want to until you reach the end of 2.X story luckly.
However this game has something called "Cross Class Actions", where if you level up some side jobs you can add some skills to your main class.
So for Astrologian, you can Cross Class skills from Conjurer (Healer that turns into White Mage) and Thaumaturge (Damage spell caster that turns into Black Mage).
For all Cross Class skills you need a level 34 Conjurer and level 26 Thaumaturge.
Because of this, I would suggest picking one of these to level for the main story. Picking Conjurer will let you get used to healing since Astrologian is a healer class. You don't need to level them both up stright away, most people only level both Cross Class jobs after they hit 50, so I would pick one of the two, unlock Astrologian, level Astrologian to level 50 to get used to playing it, level the other Cross Class class to the level needed.
Hope this helps and isn't too confusing.
Also if you're new to the game, could you use my Friend Recruit code if you don't have one already? We both get items and it would be a great help for me.
Recruitment Code: H5K8RD5M
and sure, I'll use it ;)
Story quests are the ones with a flame around them
If you knock off "Stoneskin" until later, you'll only need to get White Mage to level 8. "Swiftcast" on the other hand is a must from Thaumaturge and is acquired at level 26.
