It’s nothing unusual. It’s one of the reason why people recommend not to buy this game on steam.

We have our own sales, too, but admittedly less frequent than the Square Enix store. Technically speaking having FFXIV through Steam is the most secure seeing as how someone needs not only the ability to access your Square Enix account, and potentially your OTP, but also access to your Steam account, too. However, I wouldn't really call that a boon for owning the Steam version.

I think it's fair to say the majority of us that have it on Steam did it for the sheer convenience factor having most, if not all, of our games in one place. We are nothing if not laz... I mean efficient!

My main reason for having it on Steam is because of proton. The biggest convenience factor ever.

You can use proton on nonsteam games.
