We have our own sales, too, but admittedly less frequent than the Square Enix store. Technically speaking having FFXIV through Steam is the most secure seeing as how someone needs not only the ability to access your Square Enix account, and potentially your OTP, but also access to your Steam account, too. However, I wouldn't really call that a boon for owning the Steam version.
I think it's fair to say the majority of us that have it on Steam did it for the sheer convenience factor having most, if not all, of our games in one place. We are nothing if not laz... I mean efficient!
