You must pay sub to play. Base game comes with 30days sub. Expansion is more content. There's also trial version with some restrictions which you can only play if you don't have base game yet https://support.na.square-enix.com/rule.php?id=5382&la=1&tag=freetrial

You purchase the game, and must pay a small fee each month to play. The server requirements for MMOs are enormous - monthly fees help toward that and developing content.

it's the same payment model as WoW and most other mmos from when mmos were massive. Buy game, Buy subscription, Buy expansions, Buy subscription.

Most mmos that go for this style fail now because they don't attract enough players and they don't provide quality that is worth the subscription fee. FF14 provides it in spades IMO, while WoW has not in years.

It's pretty simple.

You buy the base game, it comes with 30 days of play time. Once those are up you need to buy more play time to keep going, either buying a subscription or buying a time card (are time cards still a thing for this game?)

Once you've completed the base game content (the content for the original A real Reborn release and the first expansion, also you only level up to level 60) you will need to buy the expansion to keep going.
Buying Endwalker will unlock the next three expansion's content and allow you to level up to level 90.

There's a free trial too that lets you play the whole base game without subscribing, but it has limitations on chat and partying up, as well as how much money you can have on your character and stops you from using the market board. Stuff like that.
Worth noting that once you buy the base game, you have to subscribe, you cannot go back on the free trial.

Isn't WoW activision / blizzard though? You're comparing square enix to dog poop? Not fair metric imo

I think I get it guys. Base game is basically buying one month. Kind of like a trial. Weird that there's expansions, but glad you only need to buy the latest also some expansions are even included in base. Think I might try this out!

FF14 is the only game from them in the last decade I thought was good. They do a lot of cash grabs just like Activsion.

they make ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games? thats fair. do they get a employee to kill himself under harrassment tho? Or have a toxic workplace? Making ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games is silly in comparison.

btw not like that matters. If they [square enix] make a good game im willing to buy it. It's like holding CDPR hostage over cyberpunk. Just don't preorder!!!

It's a bit tough to say any company is bad given that we don't know the dirt they hide under the rug.

That said Activision Blizzard definitely is the top of the list of places people do not want to work. Ubisoft is also pretty bad as well.

SE has done some pretty dumb stuff. But it feels more normal AAA publisher nonsense rather than everything those two seem to be doing.

Creative Business Unit 3 is the division that works on FF14 and they seem pretty good overall. I think it would be pretty monumental (and heart breaking) to have the same type of dirt come from that company.
