Playing on Steam gives you Steam tracking and that's about it. No bonus achievements or cards or anything. It also has a second layer of security that some people have been having trouble with -- because of how the Steam launcher now works, it no longer works on Linux. If you're planning on playing on Linux (or any other unsupported OS), you definitely want the direct from SE version (but please keep in mind that they may do something that breaks Linux use on that launcher in the near future, as well).
People will tell you that the trial can be switched between platforms when you upgrade to the full version, but the FAQ and SE themselves say differently (and we've had at least one huge thread lately from somebody who believed these people and got burned).
