FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

Too much maintenance.
Hot Take: FFXIV Has Way Too Much Downtime for a Subscription MMO

For a game that charges a monthly subscription, additional fees for retainers, and sells overpriced cosmetics, FFXIV sure loves telling paying customers they can't play. Maintenance is understandable, but the frequency and length of these outages are ridiculous for a game that literally charges you for access by the day. Funny how the subscription clock never stops ticking when the servers go offline. Square Enix has perfected the art of charging players for time they aren't even allowed to use. Apparently, the only thing that never needs maintenance is the billing system.

This is the most lukewarm take ever.
And yet here you are, contributing absolutely nothing to the discussion. If criticizing a subscription MMO for charging customers during excessive downtime is a lukewarm take, then apparently the bar for having an opinion around here is somewhere beneath the server uptime.
You are right but nothing will happen. Best we'll get is some playtime compensation, if even that.

And that's exactly why nothing changes. Players have become so accustomed to paying for downtime that even the possibility of compensation is treated like some generous act of charity. Square Enix has a pretty sweet arrangement: collect subscription fees, charge extra for retainers, shut the servers down, and let the customers debate whether getting back the time they already paid for is asking too much.
Not enough maintenance imo. Hopefully they find a way to break Dalamud in the process. :lunar2019piginablanket:

Imagine paying a monthly subscription and actively hoping the servers go down more often just to inconvenience people using plugins. That's an impressive level of spite. You're so obsessed with how other people enjoy the game that you're willing to sacrifice your own paid playtime to ruin theirs. Square Enix must love customers like you. They could shut the servers down for a week and you'd probably thank them for the privilege.

It's the resident troll, everything it says can be safely ignored.

Ah yes, the classic "troll" accusation. The perfect escape hatch when you can't actually refute an argument. Apparently, questioning why a subscription MMO charges for unavailable playtime is controversial enough to trigger the forum's self-appointed thought police. Thanks for announcing that you're ignoring me, though. Nothing says "I don't care what you think" quite like taking the time to tell everyone.
First my take was "lukewarm," and now I'm the "resident troll." Interesting how quickly you went from dismissing the argument to attacking the person making it. You've managed to reply twice without contributing a single counterargument. For someone who thinks everything I say can be safely ignored, you seem awfully invested in making sure everyone knows you're ignoring me. The irony is almost as entertaining as the mental gymnastics.
They give free days only in special cases. I think this issue should be such a special case.

Apparently you've never heard of a Emergency Maintenance period. they didn't expect the PHP RCE to release, and are seeking to protect user data from a very real threat of someone hacking into, and stealing not only paying subscribers credit cards, but account details, and other sensitive info...

they wasn't planning for this, and simply trusted the PHP protocol like 90% of the internet, about as much as you trust your foul attitude. The RCE released right after an update where they did their usual maintenance, and to protect us from a real threat they shut down their services to do a full update, not a partial one like most services are doing to stay up during this period. this isn't a normal thing I've been a subscriber for years, and to be frank your complaints come off shallow, and uninformed.

Any proper company would give you playtime for 1 days worth of downtime. It doesn't matter what the issue is you just do it. But because GCBTW worriors will do whatever SE wants they don't have to do anything.
If you actually use your brain you would realize you are defending bad consumer practices. 100% you will be mad af if your internet provider cuts your internet for 5 minutes but somehow this company gets a pass for days worth of downtime?...

That's an impressive wall of text to argue against a point I never made. Nobody is suggesting Square Enix should leave its servers vulnerable to security threats. Emergency maintenance is understandable. That doesn't magically invalidate the argument that paying customers deserve compensation for lost subscription time. FFXIV charges a monthly subscription, additional fees for retainers, and sells premium services. Players are paying for access, not donating to a charity. Whether maintenance is planned or unexpected doesn't change the fact that customers lose access to something they've already paid for. You can support necessary security updates while also supporting compensation. Those two positions aren't mutually exclusive. But apparently defending a multibillion-dollar corporation from the outrageous suggestion of extending subscriptions by a few hours is the hill you've chosen to die on.
I changed my mind. Everything you said is wrong and I hope SE doesn't give playtime compensation.

> Multiple game bans on record

Lmao. Please never log into ff14 again, And work on your reading comprehension while you're at it 🤣
