i havent played in awhile is there a catch up mechanic?

there isn't really a catch up mechanic. the game plays largely like a single player RPG up until you hit end game where you can choose to participate in MMO style end game gameplay (say that 10 times fast lol). Either way, there really isn't catch up mechanics to speak of except for a rested XP bonus and some gear from pre-orders and other events that has XP bonuses on it. Hope this helps!

catch up as in what? are you max level or still levelling?

sprouts and returners will get bonus exp when put in dungeon groups with Mentors, this doesnt speed up story progress that you will have to do to catch up though, only levelling.

You can buy Job/class specific Story level skips in the Store....

Outside of that there is no other catchup mechanic and il hope there won't be for FF14...
Meanwhile Lost Ark on the other hand..........yeah.....lol
