How to tell when an interrupt will work?
Sometimes I use Shield Slam on someone to stun/interrupt, and it doesn't do anything. Other times it works. How can I find a consistency in here? Since interrupting is better because it saves everyone having to move, but if I plan on interrupting and it fails, now I don't have time to move...

I wouldn't know since I don't play Gladiator/Paladin, if I had to guess though it's maybe some attacks are uninterruptable?

Timing and resist right?

Timing? If your interrupt can work (won't be resisted), then if it takes effect about one game update (~300ms) before what you're trying to interrupt happens, it'll work. Any later than this, and the server has already 'decided' that you're too late.

So roughly speaking, you need to tell the server (hit the button for Shield Slam) about "your ping" + ~333ms before you know the attack/effect is due to start. About .5s for most people. This means you need to be able to know when the attack/effect is due to start. i.e. if you see the progress bar for it, stun.

Resist? Kinda depends on the mob but usually you can stun something back to back about three times. That's why in most situations, you don't want everybody trying to stun/interrupt the beastie. After two or three stuns in short order, the beast will have become too resistant to stuns for any stun/interrupts to work... you then need to wait for while, say 5-15s (again, depends on the mob. Some start off as 100% resistant, some less so). Works almost like emnity/aggro... except you're trying to minimise it so your stuns/interrupts don't get resisted.

-----

As an example, take the Ifrit Primal Trial. Ifrit has a few special attacks, you can try to stun them all but that means he'll build up resistance to it quite quickly. Or you can just decide to stun one particular attack... say Eruptions (if you are slow, the target of Eruptions might be hit once but at least that shouldn't kill). You won't be stunning him frequently, so your stuns will almost always work (his normal stun resistance is kinda low, you have a near 100% chance to stun him initially). If you try to stun both Eruptions and Plumes though...

Or Dhorne Chimera... it can do both Dragon's Voice or Ram's Voice. If you don't have a BRD handy, you might want to Shield Bash it instead... in which case, if you stun both Voices, you might get resisted quite soon... or you could just bash one.

You don't. In my experience the vast majority of names are immune to stuns or whatever the effect is that interrupts spells. And even if they aren't occasionally your shield slam will just straight up miss.

When I'm tanking I'll occasionally try a slam if I have a break in my combo right when the mob tries to cast something but other than that it's basically a waste of TP. Trash mobs are the only thing I've had it work realiably on as far as interrupting spells.
