People can talk but money speaks with more authority? Check prices of certain consumables... true they are not a must-have but it's a bit like in FFXI, if you don't use them... you're from that 'other' group of players.
It's just that currently, you can easily get by without it. The 'death penalty' in FFXIV is almost non-existent, so if you die because you didn't have a Potent Para Potion to throw at Hydra... so what? Restart... so Flandre Scarlet is kinda right there.
But some players feel that spending a few gil here and there... *shrug* Compare a Flare after a High Potion of INT...
Just don't expect to get very rich of it. Especially on a Legacy server.

PS Got 50k GC seals? Why not spend some of it on repair materials. Then your 'useless' crafter job will save you a lot. I can spend around 5k on repairs... or zero if I use my crafter jobs. If it wasn't for this, I'd probably spend around 1-3k daily on repairs.
It's not about money, but about whether it "feels" like it makes a difference. With other crafting classes like weaver, I can at least make some HQ stuff for the slots I haven't gotten dungeon equipment yet.
But wtih consumables, what I want to know is if I will I can tell the difference when fighting a boss after taking a potion of int or a potion of elemental resistance and when not using any potions.
I mean, I looked at a wiki, and the buff potions have a duration of 15 seconds? that's really not much.
The 15 sec thing is because the boss battles are easy enough with the "Perfect" team, it would not be needed to carry any potions. But we all know that you wont always have that Perfect Team to back you up. So having the right potion can help to fill in holes. ex. the tank doest have a high enough armour to be a proper tank, while the healer is a total noob and cant heal for s**t.
Not to mention those pesky status attacks. If those hit your healer, which happend to me ounce. Then he cant heal because of silence. The tank fails, because of low armour + healer support.
It really ruined my day, so bad that i went completly into crafting after that. Just so that i can craft my own stuff when i need it, were ever i need it. I even hear that one guy was fishing in the middle of a dungeon raid. So funny.
That is why there are higher ranked potions. Not to mention while in a Dungeon raid. having ppl rush thru it like their A** is on fire, leaves no time for anyone to regain MP. Sure the healer can keep everones health from failing. But the healer has limits you know. So does any class have only a set amount. So when that happens the healer can boost his MP just enough to get thru the fight alive. Or if the healer is doing a bad job, then the tank can use a potion at critical moments to last him until the healer gets it together.
I know what everone is thinking. Sure, if we die then np. right. we just revive and try it again. But no one thinks what this really does for the morale of the team. having run thru a dungeon for the past 30-45min just to have everyone rage quit right at the end because no one can do their part.
Happens all the time.
The potions are a life saver in some situations and help cut back on the unavoidable damage healing as well so it takes a tiny bit of stress off heals..... Early game they are pointless though.. except food...3% exp isn't a lot but still useful.
