FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

sudden frame-drop
as the title says im experimenting some weir performance issues... the game runs fine with all the settings on high... i get about 50-60 fps, 40 on busy areas... but every now and then the frame-rate starts to decay... to only about 20-25 fps... even if i'm in a low populated area... i've tried to low the setting but nothing improves... i have to restart the game for the frame-rate to raise again... what can i do???

my specs are:
i7-3630QM
GTX 660M (with latest drivers)
6 gb of ram
win 8

memory leak or even worse, resource leak (not memory, something else... open handles?)
btw, just using the latest drivers isn't always a fix, sometimes it may make things worse. there are many cases of that sort of problems in the past. it's also a huge pain in the ass to troubleshoot... who keeps old driver installs hanging around to test if they work better than the latest ones?
i've been thinking that the problem are the drivers... i had no problems before but that one was also the windows version and not the steam one...

oh you on laptop, then pretty sure was your laptop cpu temperature over 90c, get a fan or something under it
but that doesnt explains why everything goes back to normal onece i restart the game... the cpu its still as hot... but the framerate its back to normal...

Theres nothing wrong with your laptop and theres nothing wrong with the game. It's called Latency... Get used to it wilth MMORPG's :tgrin:

actually this game coded very differently, it is nothing to do with latency, example like TERA is 100% latency link with gameplay but this game is using the "Sync" which what you do on your PC and it will sync with your internet every single sec. Unless your internet have gone crazy having outage then it will stop the sync which after 1-3 mins you will get disconnect if your internet not coming back.
What it actually does was, on your screen you have dodged the skill right before 0.5sec it blow, if you had 400+ping, it still tells that to the server that you have dodged it.
(you should know that 400+ ping people have to dodge everything that is before 2-3 sec to able to really call that dodged in those normal online games)
This is the only very small possible chance of latency issue will happen if your internet is unstable, which causing you having over 1000+ ping, your skills cast time may get a bit glitched out.

Try this.
Download Speccy and install it.
After that when you play FFXIV and you get really low FPS in FFXIV then press Alt + Tab to get back to the desktop (Just remember not to turn game off at this point) and start the Speccy software and check the your CPU and GPU temperatures.

You can download Speccy from here and it's free.

you're not the only one with problems :/

I did that, my game was at 66c, is that bad?, also i notice that the problem occurs when i enter a very crowded area, the frame-rate drops, but it nevers goes up again, even if i leave the area and waited for like a hour... the frame-rate is low in every area that i enter, as i said multiple times the only way to restore the frame-rate is to restart the game...

PD: if i restart the game the temperature its the same but the frame-rate is smooth...

is 66 your CPU or GPU temps? 66 is slightly warm for a CPU but pretty cool for a GPU. Regardless those temps will not be the cause of your issues. What power plan are you using? Are you locking the frames to 30\60\or unlimited in the settings?

i wasnt watching the gpu temp, that one got very high in fact... i think i know whats happening, when i get to a crowded area, my gpu temp rises so high it slows down the game, and then when i exit the game the temp rappidly decreases, thats why my game runs smoothly again after i restart the game...

It could be that your GPU is throttling because of Heat. I have a GTX 690 and it certainly gives my card a good working out... Next time it happens, rather than restarting, ALT + TAB to desktop, and give your GPU 10 mins to cool down, if it's working fine when you jump back into the game... You know what it is..

You may also want to try http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm , It's a great tool for monitoring your GPU.

What GPU temperatures Speccy shows while you get the FPS drop in FFXIV?
If it does show over 100-110c then it's sign of overheating.
