Each numbered Final Fantasy is standalone game.

Yep, if two games in Final Fantasy are significantly related, it'll be made apparent simply by the title. (IE, Final Fantasy VII and it sequel movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, or the prequel game Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII) Each number denotes a new universe.

The FF games are set in different worlds, each with their own plot & characters. There are some that are set in the same world just in a different era.

Some of the plots are recycled & altered slightly but the names of creatures/spells/abilities/jobs are usually reccuring. E.g The monster Behemoth makes multiple appearances. Or there's crystals involved.

A few of them had sequels which were X-2, 12 or the 13 series.

The only other FF MMO is XIV's older sibling XI, that's set in a different universe too.

But you don't need to have played the earlier titles, you'll just not recognise reccurring elements that are from the older games or seen how the FF series has changed/developed over the years.

You don't have to play the other FF games to enjoy FF14 you only imo miss out on some refs to other games sort of and some hair styles you can get but other then that not really everything be explan like the magic and such

though every FF game like others said have their own story sometimes they have more then one game but you can tell by it having the same title as the first game kinda like Mario or sonic game like Sonic 2 etc.

i only played like 7 FF games myself.

FF7 was my first, I miss Cloud :(
FFXI was amazing in its day, seeing the world for the first time in 3d was so amazing, 9 years went by quick.
FFXIV, way different game ( Way easier to play than early version of XI )
But the ..omg so good looking... But plays like a stand alone which is WAY different feel than XI has.
Cannot be compared the 2 versions, totally different story
But No no need to play other version, as this version is so it's own game it is awesome!.
Just enjoy it for what it is! Sticking to the story for new players really gets you involved and makes you a part of the story, and at some points, makes you sad, or makes you want vengeance lol it is well told and a lot of fun. :)

To sum up the answers: No. You don't need to play previous FF games to play FFXIV:ARR. They are, however, well worth playing .

Each one is its own beast and world. You'll be fine without playing them all, though some parts are nods to prior games that are meant to be little in-jokes for those who have played more of the series.

Like you must know every FF is a different world so you dont need play others to understand this game story.

You don't need to play all other FF games but to fully enjoy the game with many many many many references you should.

For example you can't understand why we laugh about one NPC mistakenly claiming he's the Tidus Slayer.

Technically, Final Fantasy XIV is linked with FF XI and XIII with major characters from both of these games appeared in FF XIV via collaboration events. Especially Shantotto commented about a major event that is yet to come for FF XIV.

They're not really "linked" in the sense that, say, VII and X are. Shantotto only got into Eorzea because she was experimenting with a dimension-hopping spell, and Lightning ended up there because of whatever BS the XIII universe runs on. Technically the multiverse does exist with Final Fantasy, but it's only really dealt with in Dissidia. (And hinted at with Gilgamesh)

That said, the story does hint at there being a major crossover event sometime in the future.
