According to the Lodestone post this'll be piloted in China first, and as far as I'm aware mobile gaming is very significant over there compared to pc/console.
Remains to be seen how much of the game they'll adapt though. The controls and UI aren't suitable for mobile phones, and it's going to be developed by a Tencent division rather than Square's own CBU3 anyway (outside of supervision).
Is this an out of season April fools joke?
I know that is my point.
if the ported the actual FF14 to mobile on same servers that would be cool.
I am getting strong Diablo Immortal vibes and this is also developed by a division of tencent games which is not exactly know for making monetary friendly mobile games.
I'm too lazy to look again and didn't retain; is it gonna be iOS or Android?
don't put any stock in it being any better than Harvest Town -- it won't be (is Tencent even capable of making a good game? could they even RECOGNIZE one?). But it will be FAMILIAR garbage, rather than just random garbage, lol.
Culture in Japan is so different. Think of game merch being treated like US folks treat sport team merch. So the branded tents, it's like buying a Seahawks tent or flask or chair or whatnot. Proud hobby display is a lot more acceptable and in a lot more industries past just professional sports.
It's weird to us because we don't see it often. I *wish* it were more socially acceptable to build and display Gundams here. :( someday.
From Famitsu article, No Gacha and its F2P
SE is licensing FF14 to an outside developer, they won't really be spending money on it.
I remember decades ago MMO players worrying and complaining about the prospect of their favorite games becoming unplayable years down the line when servers went down and now we have people lining up to play mobile ♥♥♥♥ that all entirely likely will be taken down within one to two years time and yet everyone just eats that ♥♥♥♥ up.
