Upgrading to Dragoon will give you access to several abilities (unlocked by job quests every 5 levels starting from 30) which a lancer simply can't learn. So anyone who tells you that there is no reason to advance onto your job needs to be re-evaluated. It's an integral part of the game really and shouldn't be ignored
Also, here's your answer. http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/102595-Lancer-vs-Dragoon#threads/79042-Dragoons-A-Rotation-Reborn
For example, you can use Goad from Rogue as a Lancer to help sustain your Warrior tank or another DPS class that spends their TP quickly in AoE situation. And you can use Straight Shot and I believe Raging Strikes from Archer to have a permanent +10% critical chance, and the occassional +20% damage buff.
Overall, staying as Lancer has it's benefits, but so does advancing to Dragoon. It's much like the Novice class from Ragnarok Online, if you are familiar with that game.
But in the current version, there is no reason to not advance to your job. The new job abilities are just to strong in comparison to the few cross-class skills you could pick.
Not to mention equipping the Soul Crystal itself grants a good stat buff.
It creates the illusions of customization and choice.
