If you bought ff14 on steam, do you need heavensward on steam as well?
Here's my situation. I buy ff14, the game is working fine and all (ON STEAM). Then, from a local store I see that heavensward the expansion is 35 dollars as it was on sale being originally 50. So I decide to buy it instead of getting it on steam.

Inside the package theres a disc, and two codes. One code is the registration for the expansion, and another is DLC.

I put the disc in, loads up, and start the program on the disc. Heavensward comes up saying that ff14 isn't installed when it is.

So maybe I need to redeem my codes.

Now, both codes aren't working and are saying invalid.

Im starting to wonder if getting heavensward from the store was a good idea, as im starting to believe you need the steam version. Can someone please help me? I have no idea whats wrong and I felt I just wasted money.

If you have the Steam version then you need the Steam version of Heavensward.

The retail version is not compatible with the Steam version.

maybe try to activate your HW code at the mogrystation and then start the Steam FF: ARR client. My game asked me then to download the HW addon.
I have the FF:ARR steam version but i bought the HW key from a keyseller.

Hope my writings are right, my english isnt the best.

greetings from germany

edit: but first i bought the retail version of FF:ARR then after a few months i bought the steam version, maybe thats the reason why my HW and the Steam version works together.

If you bought FF14 ARR on Steam then you MUST buy the expansion HW on Steam too. The retail version is not compatible with the Steam version and vice versa.

You'll have to take it back and get a refund then buy the expansion again through Steam or try your luck at trading it for a compatible Steam copy.

The FIRST version you register is the version your account is locked to, as such you wouldn't have been able to use heavensward version if you bought it from steam even though you bought the game through steam.
This is why the retail HW worked with your copy of FF14.

If you search around on the forums you'll usually find plenty of people willing to trade those codes for steam keys.
