Try turning off Vsync in your graphics card settings and check that the game isn't limiting the fps (which you can find in the system config).
Make sure your monitor is also actually running on 144hz.

And you have vsync turned off in the game? They call it frame rate limit in the display settings. I always just leave that off and then set the FPS cap within the gpu control panel. Also, if its a freesync/gsync monitor, make sure you actually have the setting for windowed mode set in the control panel for it.

Are we talking hertz or FPS? Because there's no option to set the game to run in 144hz unless maybe with some GPU setting magic

There's a vsync setting in game. It's just terrible.

Ya, it has freesync. If you're running a nvidia card, you probably need to turn that off since it looks like it doesn't have official compatibility with gsync. FFXIV is also just weird with freesync/gsync and really only works in full screen mode, so if you're trying to run windowed with freesync on I could see it having framecap problems.

I tried turning on Adaptive Sync, whatever that does, now it feels smoother in borderless, smh

actually nvm, that just capped it to 72hz xD

NVIDIA Control Panel, Manage 3D settings, Program settings, select final fantasy, Prefered Refresh rate, select highest available.

You have to change the refresh rate within windows and the nvidia control panel settings if you enabled adaptive sync.
