Repairing gil, buying materials, paying for materia melding, food buffs, market board and if you are into it, apartments/housing which can be used for growing things (which you can use or sell), chocobo stables, house decorations etc etc.
The game gives you plenty of reasons to have and use gil. Other bigger items like mounts I believe are tied behind events, which require special items for trade in. I have seen minions for purchase via gil, but no "really cool rare" minions.
Oh, that sucks. Well, they could still use it to buy the furniture, food stuffs, market board etc etc, rgiht? If not, trial seems painfully limited.
