Starter edition pays a monthly subscription; trial version has the above restrictions.
You are also limited to 300,000 Gil, which means you can't buy an Apartment or House.
You will limited to only the /Say and Novice Network chat channels, however you can join Linkshells and Cross-World Linkshells (they are like basic guild chat features, nothing special).
The Starter Edition removes all of those limitations.
Starter removes all the restrictions. However, once you register this version to your SE account you're bound to a subscription once the 30 free days you get are up.
To get the other 2 expansions you need to purchase the latest one.
It's just that the trial has more limitations to it which do affect the social side of the game like not being able to talk to others outside of dungeons/trials/raids/novice network or invite others into your party and you can get up to about 300k gill with no access to the market board like at all.
Personally, milk the free trial for all of its worth and then buy the complete edition once you feel like you maxed out all of the value from the trial.
