Can we talk about Aether Currents?
I'm sorry but Aether Currents was just a dumb mechanic.
Now hear me out here because I have a way to fix them so they are less dumb.
Okay so you know how the last Aether current is tied to the story progression of the area and you'll get the last one in either the last or second to last story quest in an area before you never come back to that area for story reasons?

Yeah let's remove that and make all aether currents available from the start
Or just remove them all together and make it so you can fly when you complete the last story mission in an area.

No one gains anything with Aether currents as they are, either let me get flight to do the MSQ or give it to me when I'm done with the MSQ in an area, as they are now they're just a waste of time.

I think it takes 15 minutes tops to get all aether currents on a map? You get a compass that tells you where they are now as well, so makes it super easy. A simple little time sink to discourage flying through the zone right away. A much better method than massive time gates or large sums of currency that other games enforce.

15 minutes + 4 side quests + Waiting to finish that 1 Main story quest. Time adds up quickly.

Look, we have riding maps that increase mount movement speed, but you need to first do 6 FATEs on that map. Why can't we get rid off riding maps and replace them with Aether Currents ? Each 2 collected currents would increase mount movement speed by certain %.

Ahh right... doing FATEs forces people to explore the map... even tho Aether Currents serve same purpose.
It's also, probably, meant to gate you from exploring everything or doing everything as soon as you load in. Like how zones have been split by an upper and lower area, right, you're not meant to just..go and be free. Why is it so bad to pace yourself?

Again, it's intended, so you're not flying around the zone right away. Why there's also split maps.

Not sure what's so hard to grasp from this. Add onto the fact that with over half the Aether following you along the MSQ making it even simpler.

Yeah did I say you would be granted flight straight away. I only said to replace FATE farming to get mount speed with "Gather Aether Currents, Gain Mount Speed". They can leave all that MSQ gate flight as it is. But give players some reward for exploring and finding them. Heck to me they could remove the Compass, but at least reward those that chose to find 99% of them before that final MSQ quest in the Zone.

Why people struggle to read ? Where did I say give players flight ? I said get rid of riding maps...

At the very start of your comment.

Riding maps are far more complex with only Shadowbringers and Endwalker having "Shared Fates". The majority are from Seals, each Seal different, and not even worth mentioning once you get flying for the area and just kept in for achievement hunters.

75% chance that if someone is defending something that's clearly bad design they also can't read.

Speak for yourself. It was their very first sentence in their comment. Sad...

Nowhere I mentioned flight... I guess reading with understanding was never your strongests attribute. Good luck in life

Bad design is when Halvos cries on Steam Discussions.

Brother they're saying ground speed doesn't matter once you get flight. This isn't a case of "they can't read", it's a case of you lacking reading comprehension.

Your very first sentence you wrote, involved Aether. Sad you cannot even remember what you posted, since it was in reply to the 15 minutes of time it takes to find them. The rest of your comment meant nothing to me, since wasn't part of the topic and I didn't care for it. But I still explained it afterwards when you were unable to understand why I posted as I did.

Bruh, I only said Time add up quickly when you have to gather them all. Then multiply that by 6 zones and you have a decent portion of your day taken. No where in my argument I mentioned flight. It was your imagination. My argument to you was purely "IT DOESN'T TAKE 15 MIN" you added the rest. Just because you are being quoted doesn't mean all of my message is towards you. The rest of the post was me giving an example how to make them more useful/rewarding

Riding Maps are just pure time sink to force players into making FATEs, they are useless after you get flight, hence just make Aether Currents responsible for Mount Speed. You gather enough on 1 half of the map, you get a star or X% movement increase.

I would argue that doing hunts for seals to trade for maps takes more time than 24 FATEs per expansion. Or spending Mog Tomes on them.

Ye ye, I used recent changes for my argument. Obviously, if they would rework it, imo they should do it backwards as well. After having flight, those speed boosts don't matter. However during MSQ, when they often ask you to walk across the map back and forth. It would be nice to be a little bit faster and not being forced to do FATEs.

No, they aren't.

It encourages players to explore the map, the very same people who--if the currents didn't exist--would complain that the world is large but there's no reason to see all of it or sections of it. And if quests were used to achieve that, those same people would just complain about that too.

Oh wow, I'll go to every corner of the map... once and then fly over it all, wow such a good fix to that issue.

I never said it was perfect, it's just the only viable way they can do it that won't cause a huge whinge fest. They want you to see the different areas of the worlds, even if you might only go there once (which you won't, it'll be more than that).

Why? Sightseeing? Because the maps are devoid of content other than a few side quests that pop up after doing certain msqs. Some people like looking at their surroundings and some don't.

If you don't, you don't, but that's how the game is designed and it probably won't change any time soon, unless they can figure out a better way of getting the player to look rather than zoom by on their mounts, which is has been a problem in almost every MMO with mount systems. WoW, FFXIV, TESO, etc etc.

And saying it is devoid of content is just blatant dishonesty.

Ohhh nooo, those are like that for a reason.

1. A lot of areas are blocked off by ravines and other natural barriers to keep you on rails and away from spoilers. Being able to fly over those barriers would ruin the setpieces they have for you.

2. You *do* come back to most regions for side content. Manderville, gatherer jobs, Blu mage spells, beast tribes (or whatever we're calling them now), classes from expansions, etc. Being able to fly throughout those is extremely handy. Sometimes the MSQ even takes you back there anyway in a later expansion (or the in-between of expansions)
