Can we talk about Aether Currents?
I'm sorry but Aether Currents was just a dumb mechanic.
Now hear me out here because I have a way to fix them so they are less dumb.
Okay so you know how the last Aether current is tied to the story progression of the area and you'll get the last one in either the last or second to last story quest in an area before you never come back to that area for story reasons?

Yeah let's remove that and make all aether currents available from the start
Or just remove them all together and make it so you can fly when you complete the last story mission in an area.

No one gains anything with Aether currents as they are, either let me get flight to do the MSQ or give it to me when I'm done with the MSQ in an area, as they are now they're just a waste of time.

Apparently you'd rather wait until 7.2 and do two months worth of questing, maybe 3-4 Societies worth of reputation, all the way up to Bloodsworn before you can unlock flying?

It COULD be worse. Just be thankful that you can get flying on Day 1 with minimal hassle.

Welcome to MMO content padding. Some things are specifically designed to make sure to waste your time to keep you subbed to the game for longer or some other artificial reason like trying to make the zones look more populate or potentially get you distracted with a fate or two as you chase the aether currents. If anything FF14 does a pretty good job of not having a lot time wasting systems but of course they are still there since its part of the game genre at this point.

If anything this system is not very time consuming looking at other MMOs and if you never played any other MMOs than believe me you have no idea what time wasting is and how far that can go to achieve simplest things in game.

The idea is to encourage the player to actively explore the area so they can see everything that the designers did put into that zone.
Personally, I'm fine with that idea but I think that 10 aether currents is way too much and just 4 will be enough.
I Agree, Aether Currents serve no purpose aside from wasting most players time. Not everyone is going hunting and gather nodes can be found with starting skills and a little exploring.

Some places feel like it's made JUST for an aether current instead of being of any place of note.

Flying should be restricted, but behind hidden aether currents that most people will just look at a map to find are very boring and time consuming.

If it was just 5 quest and 5 explores, I can be fine with that, but 10 per area (And 4 quests as 1 quest is from MSQ for all areas) feels like a tired and exhausted concept that I wish had some new updates to it.

no, am telling you that every mmo is like that and yet you keep playing them. some are more guilty of it, some lesser but it happens everywhere as soon open world is a thing. if you dont like it, dont play games which have the "open world" thing. thats all am telling you because you clearly dont like it. i didnt said that you are not allowed to complain about it. am more wondering why you play games like this then.

maybe CoD, dota, LoL or fortnite is more to your likes. if you dont like FF14´s aether current mechanic then ... well ... you´re gonna quit then? or doing it anyways. i mean, i doubt it will change because its since forever like this.

They brought a discussion about why X system sucks and offered different ways to fix that. We know that it won't be added into the game but having a discussion about the said system isn't a bad thing at all.

the idea behind it is that you explore and you find quiet nice places when you do them aaand you are happy when you have them all.
if you want easy flying, play WoW. even tho on some expansions was it not so easy to achieve it but they made it easy again =P

Why? Sightseeing? Because the maps are devoid of content other than a few side quests that pop up after doing certain msqs. Some people like looking at their surroundings and some don't.

Your thread won't change anything, they are bigger issues and demands already ignored on official forums (steam forum have no influence at all).

You'll just get more upset.

However some other people seem to have difficulty to find aether current, I think they forgot about the compass, never used a map and never got any issue to find them during MQ.

This topic comes up literally every expansion that's had them. They are fine, they will continue to be fine. As others have said, it encourages exploration to a degree and can help with pacing. Just like how you can't get the BiS on the x.0, you can't have flight until you unlock it.
I think it takes 15 minutes tops to get all aether currents on a map? You get a compass that tells you where they are now as well, so makes it super easy. A simple little time sink to discourage flying through the zone right away. A much better method than massive time gates or large sums of currency that other games enforce.

15 minutes + 4 side quests + Waiting to finish that 1 Main story quest. Time adds up quickly.

Look, we have riding maps that increase mount movement speed, but you need to first do 6 FATEs on that map. Why can't we get rid off riding maps and replace them with Aether Currents ? Each 2 collected currents would increase mount movement speed by certain %.

Ahh right... doing FATEs forces people to explore the map... even tho Aether Currents serve same purpose.
It's been pointless from the start, You know what i do with side quests who have aether attached?

Do you remember any of the Aether side content from HW? SHB?

No? Me Neither, When i do a quest it is because i feel like doing a quest and or experiencing the story.

Tying important resources to story is braindead.
