Wuk as a character is not great, but not terrible, she is just fine as a sprut character, beyond this, she is an improvement over lyse.

Main issue with Wuk Lamat is the accent changes every sentence and isn't consistent

It stands out compared to the rest of the characters as if someone is trying to put an accent on rather then having that accent or being confident in keeping it

In comparison Koana shows how to keep a consistent accent throughout the dialogue and stands out

In comparison to Zero in Endwalker Post MSQ that was 10/10 voice actor, the inconsistency of Wuk Lamat in English harms the story

Should've just followed Zero for another campaign if this was going to be it

Zero was awful. Her only personality trait is repeating a noun someone said before tipping her hat.

The writing isn't up to par sadly. The VA isn't the only problem the character has. A good VA cannot make a badly written character good. Hopefully SE listens to the criticism of the player base.

I have no problem with the VA conversely, i just think the expansion has focused too much on one character and I am bored. While i am not a fan of ensembles in movies, ff14 certainly benefited in the past from enough characters you can choose to like or dislike.

even the side characters are constantly linking back to Wut's story.

I honestly don't know of anyone who heard/knew/cared about what the Voice Actor/Actress was in real life until after the news pieces started in an attempt to deflect away from the only thing that matters

Is the voice professional quality and does it fit the role and do the job?

If you say yes, great enjoy it

But i would advocate that the reason this topic has come up (in say, in comparison to Zero for example) is due to there being a lack of quality in the voice acting, be it lack of experience, accent that is not consistent, emotions shown or not shown, etc etc

On steam at least, the second you get the LGBTQ community involved in any way it becomes a sticking point. Too many weird people in this community.

To the people who do just genuinely dislike the voice acting, however, I think they may be getting confused. Zero's voice was just a more familiar english accent that people wouldn't struggle with. Wuk's accent is something you basically never hear, so people aren't sure how to process it.

When you're Latino, you'll notice how ugly and weird her accent is, she doesn't even speak Spanish. And she isn't Puerto Rican ( her grandma is), she was born and raised in America and only taught English.

People have strong opinions on her regardless of the VA behind the character.

It's not helping the situation that some defenders, not all mind you, imply everyone who thinks she's sub par is a "problematic" member of society. They attempt to connect the hate to the VA and not the performance or writing. So let's try not to make assumptions about motive unless given just cause imo.

That being said, I personally find her to be acceptable as a character. Not great, but certainly not the worst I've ever seen either.

Steam just has a history of overreacting to anything they interpret as woke; and a lot of these same people on steam aren't just expressing dislike, they're having complete mental/emotional breakdowns over her.

Its hard to not write this off as just steam being steam. Tans VA; Tomboyish female lead; The story is a kind of hamfisted message about celebrating diversity. It's not hard to understand why certain elements of steam are absolutely fuming right now.

Not entirely true. There are some who painting anyone who doesn't praise the VA as being "transphobic". I didn't even know the VA was trans until I happened to see it mentioned one day. It didn't change my opinion of the quality of her VA. I think Wuk's VA did, at worst, an average job. There were parts she fell flat, but overall I think she did well.

Now that i finished the expansion, i have a feeling that it wasn't just Wuk lamat. Dont get me wrong, i like her character concept. Which might have awoken something in me.
But the voice director did sub par.
A lot of the voice acting felt off.
Ystola's voice sounded weird, as if the room she was in wasn't audio proofed.
The ice cream scene felt really weird
Wuk lamat lacked vocal range. (I did look at her portofolio and she is very much capable of it, just less experience)
thancred felt off in hindsight.

Also some lip syncing felt off in the last zone.
Also the improv scene in yesterland with wuk lamat definitivly was not double checked in writing. As i experienced cringe unlike what i have felt in a long time

This is how I learned of it as well. I'm not denying that the steam community has a proclivity towards over reacting but from what I can tell this is a sentiment being discussed to some degree across the internet. Namely reddit and Twitter from the YouTube videos covering the issue.

You're kidding, right? The story is bad. I ended up playing with subs because Wuk Lamat sounds like a flamboyant man. It made me uncomfortable and pissed me off. She's the whole expansion and never shuts up.

I also wasn't invested in the story and I felt like a babysitter dragging my feet, watching myself become the background character. I buy expansions to be involved and invested.

Maybe I'm just old and it's time to go. I've been playing FF14 since 2015. This step down in story doesn't justify $40.


My friend wanted me to play with him so he bought it for me. This is the first expansion I chose not to pre order. It stank of questionable design choices.
I knew that just by looking at the trailer.


FF14 is popular because the storytelling is usually very good. I think that's over now. The story keeps me into FF14. Not the gameplay. That's the weakest part in my opinion.

I'll come back when the next expansion drops. If it's good. I will not invest in a mmo that bores me and makes me cringe. You can if you want to.

Wuk Lamat sucks. I wanted a real vacation.

I'm only up to the third zone but holy cow is her "growth" not earned in any serious fashion. It's like Rey in Star Wars when she's suddenly using the Force with incredible prowess and Han/Luke/Leiah/Chewie are all cast aside as supporting characters. Or a botched version of One Piece if Oda skipped Alabasta through Water 7 and suddenly Luffy is in Enies Lobby fighting Lucci and co without any buildup. Or if Naruto just whips out his Ninetails shenanigans and dunks on Orochimaru in the Genin Exams.

I hated Wuk Lamat long before I knew anything about the VA. Despite my annoyance with how Lyse was handled I would take her over Wuk in a heartbeat. At least in Stormblood I didn't want to push Lyse off a cliff.
