I think characters like her have a place within the world of FF XIV and should exist. But if you have seen a couple of them, to have her as the lead in the story is not a good choice. Also the writing represents this character in the most basic form and doesn't give it a twist or anything that plays with this trope or evolves it.
Warriors are simple people.
You mentioned '"no spoilers" yet your theme for the thread is a 'spoiler' on itself.
Additionally, moving on from that, everyone whom replied (except me) spoiled.
So I guess it just became a free for all thread, yes?
Agree, I wish they explained how she managed to come back.
He was there to be a guide. He did guide stuff. He didn't feel the need to repeat himself to try and hammer home a point.
Also I don't see a problem about the voice actor for Wuk Lamat. Goku and quite a few other men/boys are voiced by women. I thought it was alright. Not as good as others.
It's hard for me to hate any character since I know they aren't real. I thought the writers did a lot of characters dirty this expansion. Like all of them almost.
True, most of the Scions are there as background decoration. Or rather to get some merchendise profits. None of them were needed. Yet all showed up. (Except Tataru, tho she probably will appear in Post DT with some money making scheme)
To state that Wuk gets some kind of character development during the msq is hardly a shocking revelation. And Erenville is acting the way I described almost immediately as soon as you start the expansion.
So I suppose you have a point technically, but I didn't think it would be a major spoiler.
I also advised people to use spoiler covers if they wanted to go in depth. So I did try to adhere to "as spoiler free as possible" :P
Wuk Lamat just isn't likeable and the voice acting just feels off,
Wuk Lamat is an extroverted shounen protagonist (which I don't mind) and had some good character development during the rites and genuinely cute moments. I even had her marked down as new best girl for a while.
It was the writing and story progression later on that managed to make me dread interacting with her from a certain point on, which only got worse over time. She just stopped developing at some point and turned into a broken record with zero tact or grasp of the overall situation. That made her genuinely exhausting to be around and a chore to listen to/read through her monologues/dialogue parts.
Erenville on the other hand did what he was there for with a more subtle character arc in the background. He started out as a complete loner who prefers animals over people, only to slowly open up in his own introverted, slightly pessimistic way and never overstayed his welcome. The way he reacted to later story beats (poor kid...) felt natural and relatable, as did him retreating back into himself at points. That's why I still like him.
Also, Wuk Lamat was the "telling" character in the story, which was overdone immensely by the writing team, while most character development and story beats around Erenville fell under the more palatable "showing" category without spelling everything out ad nauseam.
This is disingenuous. but Iam sure you're not making this up just to cause a comotion, so I will drop my 5 gil.
Erenville doesn't overstay his welcome, doesn't take most of the limelight and doesn't force himself into situations, or is forced upon you.
If your argument was "screentime" then put Alphi, Ali and Krile in there as they are almost always at your side too.
The issue with wuk is: being hamfisted, she is a suffocating char, you are not given pause to breathe, act or even miss her, she is always there and the argument "but she is the protagonist" makes no sense, being a protagonist of her own story does not excuse bad writing, more on that later.
This xpac had 3 focal characters hinted from the start all who share a similar theme.
Eren, Krile and Wuk. the shared theme being their parents, the legacy they leave to their kids and coming to terms with their death
Krile is the most unfornate of all tree as we only get to dive into her story AFTER THE 2ND TRIAL AT LVL 99 TRIAL! and even then it's relegated to a small quest at the end zone, this wasnt supposed to be the xpac where Krile joins the main cast, and yet her spot in the sun was left to the very end, a waste, but Iam sure they will move to her during post MSQ due to the lore implications of that reveal.
Erenville is the best, he has a role from the start, he is a guide, he knows the lore and nature, he dumps exposition on you when needed but isn't long winded, and he have a personality that isn't obnoxious, he is by all metrics, a good travel companion.
By the time you Dump Wuk for a few moments you have a candid moment with him, you find about his past, his motivations, you know him as a person, and he proves he can be useful despite not being a fighter, by the end of the story he have his own arc, his time to shine in a tasteful amount and it feels satisfying.
Personally; I never liked him, I always thought people liked him cuz the community is horny and he is "hot" to them, but by the end of DT I now enjoy him and I find him a good character.
Now comes Naruto, to begin, I play in JP, I didn't know nor care about any USA politics drama or whatever hysterical childish behavior has befallen upon this fair realm, PERIOD!
In JP she is basically Naruto, a boastful blockhead who tries to act cool despite her weakness, I found her endearing in 6.5 and she filled the hole left by Yda when she was retconned into Lyse, the uplifting airhead of the group, her motivations are good, she isn't a Mary Sue, for the most part, more on this later, and she isn't a girlboss either, she has weakness and learns thru the story to depend on others.
But, she is suffocating as I've said before, to the player, to the supporting cast and pacing.
Optional manywords gobbie tongueflap:
Apologies for grammatical mistakes but I ain't proofreading this
Regarding Scions supporting cast: this xpac had the Scions at the trailer, it was marketed as having their presence, yet they all have 3 to 5 VA scenes at best, while Wuk goes on and on, we have no interaction with the Scions, we had a campfire scene with Alphinaud for the first time since HW and we share no meaningful words, no reminiscence, no casual friendly talk, in fact we don't even talk! but Wuk barges into your room unsolicited twice in the story, to dump her emotions unto you, before this we had a single scene where you choose your favorite Scion in EW for a candid talk in your inn room, these are characters we know since ARR and yet, we had one special moment heighting the emotional weight of the moment everyone was facing at EW, there is no emotional weight to DT nor to the WoL relation to her, she is just there pushing herself as the WoL surrogate sister. Poor timing for the delivery.
.
Regarding the verisimilitude as a local: she is a a princess, whose father reign over a whole continent, who lived her whole life in this land and yet acts clueless at every moment, prompting Erenville to explain something to her and to you by proxy, this is poor writing, she didn't had to be dumb regarding the culture of her subjects in order for exposition to be given to the WoL, which begs the question: why is she like that? didnt her father tutored her and the others on the nations under their rule or she simply choose to ignore it? did she never traveled or got curious about it?
This diminishes her character, she wants to rule over people yet doesn't know anything about them, "but she is her story and she is learning", it doesn't justify her ignorance over her own land or forgives the writing issue, "but the WoL had the same in ARR", and most of that was also poorly written, but it had the single and weak excuse that it was needed in order to set the world to the player, "so they're doing the same here because this is setting the new lore", which is a bad argument as mentioned before, Wuk doesn't have to be ignorant about her land in order for exposition to be delivered to the WoL, we are the PoV character, not her, we require exposition, not her.
Regarding the presence, some personalities are more endearing, others less, they choose to go with a Naruto, Luffy, Goku, this is ok, but not everyone will enjoy it, people have to accept that this alone will make people dislike her, so far the WoL was the protagonist, a silent one at that, when you're forced to follow someone else story, people are allowed to dislike their personalities just like people will watch DBZ or Naruto if they like, or not if they don't, in here we are not given a choice, we are forced there, so, this is a part and parcel of the writer's choice.
Furthermore, going back to the already mentioned issue: she doesn't give you time to breathe, if her personality doesn't appease you, this is an aggravating thing.
Regarding the player: You are trapped doing chores DESPITE YOSHIDA CONSTANTLY TALKING ABOUT THE WOL RETURNING TO HIS ADVENTURER DAYS and this being a beach episode, I don't think anyone would be happy if they went on vacation and were given the leash of someone else kid and told to babysit them for their whole vacation.
"but the msq is always on rails" yes, and the MSQ was always best received when events occurred in a natural manner rather than having a mandate order on where to go next, Minfilia is a good example of this, and everyone hated her in 2.0 as well, because this sort of approach feels like doing chores when you compare to SHB where events progressed naturally under a sense of urgency, "but this isn't the end of the world", and it doesn't to be in order for the story to have tension, a good example of good pacing is during the 93 quests with the giants, when Tritorch is released, everyone bands together in a tense moment. Every good story, regardless of stakes operates with this: you build tension and you release it, you set up and you pay off and the initial story simply have nothing at all, you are just there serving as a henchman to Wuk, add this to the other issues, and it's not a surprise that people may not enjoy it.
Regarding the player, part 2, ep5: You are not allowed to roam free and explore(as per XIV definitions) until lvl 96, once again, Yoshida sold this as a new adventure, yet there is almost nothing for the most part of it, we go from local elections to world threatening event as quickly as you can say Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn, but for most of it you're just an spectator, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the xpac with the least combat out of all, and while some may argue that fetch quests or kill 3 enemies quests are boring, and I agree, to an extent, having the first half of the story be essentially you as the henchmen of Naruto uzolamati is boring for the same reasons: no variety and this by proxy hurts her char, because she is the reason we are anchored.
Regarding the final fight: Wuk simply ruins it, you have at that moment Graha, the person with the knowledge of Allagan, Alex and Omega tech, and literally future tech, and Krile a scholar from Sharlayan, but it is Wuk that somehow forces herself into the last fight to talk to Sphene?
At no point in the story it is suggested that WuK excels in anything, her biggest power is her good heart, not her brains, not even her muscles as she is unable to even get to Bakool Ja during their first clash and have a long battle with him during her RP solo duty before she takes him down, but she somehow "hacks" inside a program to deliver her Emet Selch "remember us" moment? it takes A LOT of suspension of belief to swallow this one and it comes out as hamfisted as per usual. so we have to assume that Graha took her and tossed her in there because she had to use the litter or something.
We were not even allowed to have our murderhobo WoL moment with a boss in peace.
"but Zero did it", and she had a Chekov gun set up for that moment, she was the only one in there who could Pokeball Zeromus, Wuk never had this set up, and she only did it after we had pretty much beaten Zeromus with the power of Azem cheat engine, now, the WoL, savior of the universe, have to be saved by a Ungabunga warrior because...
To have her be worried about her people is one thing, to have the dumbest NPC at that moment hack in a computer program to prevent the final boss from making you install win 11 is a whole other beast.
Iam sure there are a few more things here and there, but Iam honestly not invested into this to spend more 5 mins here thinking about it, besides, most won't even read it, I hope you do, OP, at least.
Thank you for watching this vid until the end make sure to share, like subscribe and activate the notification bell or something.
I agree with you 100 % . I would probably call her Ash Ketchum, Rather than Naruto. Just fits more into whole "Gym badge collecting"
The worst part is. I am still waiting for vacation adventure. We got a sneak peak with Erenville.. but thats not enough
Technically we're awaiting for that adventurer reset since 6.1 if you think about it.
