Not really. If you want to write a story more inclusive of other cultures but don't actually know how to go about that or can't find good resources on it, it's good to be able to consult someone, I think.

The problem with leaving it to a firm, is the lack of discernible credibility and potential bias that firm might have for specific themes or tropes.

But yeah, I think you're right, generally. I stand by the idea that way too many folks like to attribute every piece of bad writing to this singular boogieman company.

You know, that's a fair criticism. My only critical response to it is to point out a specific example in Star Trek: Voyager, of the studio hiring a consultant on Native Americans who turned out to be a complete fraud. Everything to do with Chakotay was basically made up wholecloth To Sound Native American, and the studio really DID try to do its due diligence.

Not to say you're necessarily wrong, just that you can end up with a bad result either way.

Oddly, I'm watching Star Trek Voyager right now for the second time around - ten years later, so I'm in a somewhat unique position to reply to this with more thought than I ordinarily would. (In the middle of season 4 at the moment, where nearly every problem is solved by the 'borg tech' macguffin).

Yeah, the Chakotay episodes with native american themes feel so stereotypical that it beggars belief.

And pretty much, yeah. The best way to handle this, imo, is in-studio, by exploring perspectives that are credible. Writers do this all of the time when incorporating things into their novels.

I think that is the idea.

I remain fairly unconvinced of this approach myself, it dosn't seem very reliable. It also dosn't have anything to do with FFXIV at all from what I can tell.
