Free trial, or Dawntrail?
I bought the base game way back when it came out and got to around level 30. I was thinking about playing again and see there is a free trial until around level 60?, but only for fresh accounts. I think if also have to pay to change my characters race and whatnot, so it seems like it would be better to just make a new account for the free trial and rebuy the game after hitting the free cap, but I'm not 100% certain on how this all works.

Any advice?

If you're making a new account for it anyway you might as well use the Free Trial until you're forced to buy the game to proceed.

You would have to create a new account to play on the free trial again as the moment you sub or buy the game then you are forfeiting the free trial in that case.

The story alone is hundreds of hours of content until the point you have to begin paying.

Few things:

-You get free fantasia (char edit "potion") when you finish lvl 50 main quest.
-I believe you get one too due dawntrail graphic updates. (To get a free Phial of Fantasia, head to Ul’dah – Steps of Thal and talk to the not at all dodgy looking Medicine Merchant (X:13.4 Y:9.2) to pick up the quest called ‘Bottled Fantasy’.)
-And one with HW collectors edition for new chars you make (Tho, get it on sale)

Now OPINION:

Make new one, remember that steam owners can only have one service account and you cant "go back to free trial". I believe.

So if you want to do free trial and your steam is linked to one account, you can get "windows PC" version from official website. Trial should be easy to find (unlike regular lmao)

For free trial you get base-game and 2 expansions. Thats around ~100-200 hours of content and if you play, lets say, 10 hours week thats at least 2-3 months sub-free.

HW from Howlongtobeat: ~60 hours just story
SB from Howlongtobeat: ~60 hours just story
Basegame: Anywhere from 50-100h depending how much you wanna explore and level.
(plenty of side-stuff like raids for all expansions and base game tho)

You can have 2 "service accounts" tho. I have 2, one steam one "non-steam". If it wont let you choose, pick datacenter on main menu and it asks

But you wont be able to pay with steam wallet (hence no steam points, oh no) if you go Windows PC version.

Hope this made sense

To add to this, go through the MSQ and finish it up until entering Heavensward content.
A LOT of the early MSQ is a slog save for a handful of stretches where you're actually treated as an important individual rather than the entire continent's personal gopher. And the variety in content will give you a better idea of if the game is for you in general.

Different people find different things enjoyable about the game. Some people LIKE the MSQ, some people prefer dungeoneering (it's me!), some people like the PVP, Trials (trials only become worth repeating after finishing A Realm Reborn content), gathering classes, crafting classes, or even just wandering around doing Fates.

So take the time to find what you enjoy about the game to decide whether or not you want to buy the expansion content.
