Why did they change Tribes to Society?
I know its probably because of "woke" localizers. But what exactly is wrong with calling them Tribes other than its not pc which I never thought it was offensive to call them that? Did they change other things to be more pc redundant?

Lorewise: this tie with them moving away from the concept of beast tribes being "savages" in the MSQ as these beast tribes slowly are allying themselves with the Eorzean Alliance and forsaking their savage nature, the name change was inevitable, as they were deemed "beasts" because they worshipped the Banshin "foreing/savage gods" translated as Primals.
By the end of EW you pretty much eliminated all presence of Primals everywhere.

As for the less savory RL PC reasons: According to the lead of localization back in a Fanfest panel, they had "sensitivity consultants" to prevent "an apu incident" in this game when dealing with cultures such as indian and furthermore natives, it's easy to see that naming groups of foreigners as "beasts" did ring some bells in the SE Ethics Department.
Althou I wish they had gone with "Allied quests" rather than "allied societies" because the later sounds like souless corpo BS I expect from Ubisith.

To be fair, FFXIV's MSQ requires basic media literacy to comprehend in the first place. UwU

Far more nuanced than just "the wokes" infiltrating your bideo game.

There is a narrative reason why Eorzea has moved away from the use of "beast tribes," namely that we've "allied" with them, hence the name, but there is also a gameplay and design reason why that bucket needed to be renamed. After all, are Moogles a "beast tribe"? Are Lalafell a "beast tribe" if they're from the First?

That said, the new name they've chosen sucks. SE sucks at naming things. I can't believe BLU has gone for 5+ years being call a "limited" job.

I mean BLU is limited. You can't use BLU in Duty finder

The reason is evident, I just think the name sucks.

It's simultaneously unflattering to the design space and doesn't particularly explain where and how BLU fits into the game either. There are words they can use to describe an alternative way to experience content without using the same words we might have used to describe someone in a wheelchair like, 5-10 years ago. Maybe there is a cultural gap between JP and US at play.

Does anyone want to be called "limited"?

e.g., "hero" job, "solo" job, and hell, if they're willing to work with a descriptor as bland and with as much negative stigma as "limited", they'd certainly be able to use the word "alternative" as in you're playing the game an alternative way, not necessarily playing the game on a limited experience.

They could've - I'd argue should've - just made up another category of job entirely. Beastmaster and Blue Mage could've been vocations, and they define vocations as how they define limited jobs today, for example.

It's not like someone can hear the two words "limited job" and immediately come to an understanding - as the limits themselves aren't really made clear in the sales pitch. I think there's a popup that briefly explains the core thrust as you take the BLU job crystal, but despite it being such a face-value name with no flare, it's still not really that descriptive unless you already know said limits and you're given an ingame brochure to even *try* to explain what's happening, and even then more research is necessary.

It's a problem so small barely worth the time to talk about it, but I'm just not a big fan of
the name limited job, and I hope they rebrand it at some point. They've rebranded Beast Tribes 3 times now, so, it's not alien.

My only issue with it is that 'Societal Relations Quest Completed' looks a bit long winded on screen.

I am in a wheelchair and not once was described as limited. I have limited mobility but that isn't a insult. I think you are misunderstanding what limited means. As for BLU it literally tells you upon unlocking what the job is limited too

All well and good, yet my father who is also confined to a wheelchair told me after visiting the doctor's in 2021 that he actually hates being considered "limited," so I guess not everyone in a wheelchair thinks the same thing, if you can believe that.
I can assure you I'm not "misunderstanding" what it means, but whether it's negative, positive, or neutral is different to everybody who hears it. That's really a whole other rabbit hole of a discussion.

My point is, they really could've gone with literally anything else, notably the examples I provided you. That they need to try to *further* explain the concept of a limited job further when you pick up the job only reveals to me that it's a name that can use a bit of work.

If someone is calling someone limited who is disabled then they don't understand the word or your dad is an idiot for thinking limited mobility is offensive

Um... there was really no reason to insult my family - my old man no less - over... blue mage's name, lol
Consider this truly compelling discussion over.

They were called beast tribes because they all used to be beast tribes until Shadowbringers. The Pixies were not beasts and neither were the dwarves, so it didn't make sense to call them beast tribes. The Arkasodara, the Omicrons and the Loporrits weren't beast tribes either, so they decided to change the name to Tribal Quests, but perhaps they thought that the name didn't sound good enough, so now they're Allied Societies, after all, the Omicron quests didn't involve just the Omicrons, but also the Loporrits, the Karellians, the Grebuloffs, the Ea, the Dragons and the Nibirun.

"Beast," like "savage," was a pejorative within the FFXIV universe (from ARR to SB), and the UI nomenclature changed after they were assimilated (so with 6.1), to reflect this development in MSQ as early as Stormblood.

I could quote my Encyclopedia Eorzea, because this convention died years ago, long before the UI adjustments that came with post-EW content.

Here's a screenshot from my Encyclopedia Eorzea Volume II. Page 250. Published November 24th, 2018: https://imgur.com/a/j4NtsrM

Shadowbringers released on July 2nd, 2019, for reference.

For anyone claiming the decision was DEI inspired, literally consult my citation from 2018. The name change in ShB and EW was really just to catch-up to the established lore. From its inception, "beast" was a pejorative in-universe, and no, "beasts" were never savage, they just engaged in summoning magick and contested over land - like most Eorzeans were doing.

Yes but this is basic knowledge that requires one to have actually played the game instead of being an outrage tourist. >;3

Some of these users are genuinely frustrated racists who are too cowardly to slur and state their actual positions. It's much easier to weasel behind "beast gonna beast, hehehehe, amirite???!!!!"
What the hell happened to the racist archetype. They're all betas now.
