I'm sure others can add more into it
There are plenty of guides on YT if you search for it and fill time before you can play, though honestly, its one of those games that if you have played MMO's before it does well in directing you in game as to what to do.
This MMO has very big emphasis on main story. If you're more into MMO activities like dungeons it may take a while to get into those since they are gated behind main story progression.
If you enjoyed that part in Star wars The old Republic then you'll enjoy FF XIV for sure.
If you expect Metin2 gameplay - leveling through grinding mobs then you might get dissapointed or relived since leveling is done through dungeons. The closest thing you'll get in this game is Bozjan Front around lvl 80 or smth smiliar soon to be introduced in the newest expansion. You can still level by killing mobs in overworld or FATEs (overworld events centred around kiiling mobs) but it's not as efficient.
The lowest point is the base game - ARR. Many ppl quit around level 40 due to majority of the story being boring, long to get thorugh and irrelevent, although it gets some pay off later on.It gets better after around ~40ish level. Imo skip the main story once certrain white-bearded amnesiac guy gets introduced around 40 level. Past this point story is at least decent.
The gameplay start getting more intresting once you get access to actual, "more advance", jobs at evel 30 too. Dungeons, trials and music stay good consistently (even better as story goes on, not to say about expansions).
Mind you there will be so difficulties logging into the game due to new expansions release.
I myself got into this game 2 years ago, 8 months after previous expanion's release.
I would say now is a good time to enter since there will be opportunities to make Gil through crafters and gatherers, some jobs got changed in newest patch, QoL change got introduced, bunch of boring/"bad" mandatory duties (instances) got changed into solo duties, certain dungeons got changed across post Endwalker patches.
Once you get pass ARR filter you're for a treat.
The main story has a rough start but gets really good when you get to the expansions. The map design for the first part is dated. It looks good but can feel restrictive since the maps are small. The expansions map designs are more open spaces.
People are always running the older content. There are Daily bonuses for older Dungeons, Raids, Boss Fights.
When you are in a major city ask to join the Novice Network with /shout. It is like a general chat where you can ask questions and usually someone will know the answer.
Their are tons of mini games.
In other words; If you want to start playing with the free trial, it might be a good idea to wait a little.
However, wait a month or two until after July 2nd before hopping in because ques will be a nightmare due to Dawntrail’s launch.
It's not like your other options are better.
The first expansion really shows its age and it's not good. I'd suggest speed-running it on the free trial and not paying for it. With the free trial you won't be able to access the market board join or create a Free Company (clan) but you don't need to. The game throws money at you like candy. Your respected Job class will also provide you with up-to-date armor during your leveling-quests - don't worry about gear.
PVE is incredibly popular but you won't see your first dungeon until level 15 which can take a few hours if you aren't following the Main Story Quest. Other dungeons and raids are unlocked in their own quests afterwards but the most populated dungeons are Main Quest related at low level. Make sure to do your daily leveling roulette.
PVP is a broken cheating mess but there's some nice glamour (override accessories) you can get out of it if you can stomach people using mods with unbalanced class mechanics.
Download mods at your own risk. It is not allowed but SE does not backend their users so they can't really tell who uses what. I wouldn't. It becomes a numbers game of how hard you can hit instead of having fun during a fight.
If your MAIN interest in MMO's is Endgame Raiding, and you find the MSQ/Leveling
Slow and Boring, then I strongly suggest you buy the Skips/Boosts from the Store.
The Trial version and the MSQ will teach you nothing of value, other than the absolute basics, and it is ment for Beginners or Someone who never played an MMO before.
There are a lot of YouTube, Discord and Sites that will teach you how to play the Game the right way — in actual hard content.
FF14 is a virtual novel with some of the best musical scoring on the market, comparable to SWTOR's grandiose symphonies. And unlike SWTOR, the narration is linear: you do not have the luxury of moral choices, or multiple branching paths that differ by moral archetype or consequence like Dishonered, where actions determine the ending.
Combat is not really where FF14 shines. Its combat incorporates the GCD model, rather than innovating upon the combat system of FF11 and FF12, which Square Enix introduced in its first MMO, and originally pioneered - what set it apart from most MMOs on the market.
But if you enjoy the GCD combat system of WoW and MMOs like WoW, and don't mind a GCD system that is comparatively a little less fluid, and offers zero build diversity - just diversity of classes for the same role - you may enjoy FF14.
