I mean, I managed to play at Endwalker launch. BC, nobody was. Servers were going up and down like a Labrador Retriever on a trampoline.
...well, I remember
Some times servers themselves were individually down and not the whole game but they could be down for days
BC launch in WoW around the holiday was crazy.
Big content launches are often as described, a big content launch.
EW was fine, in fact it was smooth, people saying EW had a bad launch are just doing their best Steve Buscemi how you doing fellow kids face to pretend they were there.
ARR, HW and SB had terrible launches.
It NEVER ends early for patches and xpacs, NEVER, as this would give people an unfair headstart against those who are not wildly refreshing the launcher every 5 secs.
xpacs and patches servers always go up at the exact time quoted, only routine maintenance and hotfixes end up early.
I don't know about ARR and all the previous expansions, but don't you remember people stuck in queue and getting DC after 2+ hours waiting due some login server issue? They even suspended sales for a couple of weeks because of it.
I actually think Shadowbringers had the "best" launch, but honestly the queues were still awful and the game could be unstable. But I at least don't remember anything especially noteworthy like Raubahn EX, 1017, or removal from shelves.
YMMV though I guess
But the time spent is easily forgotten, and I'm sure they appreciate every minute of patience.
Um that also happened in EndWalker. Like I was qued 2275, after 30+minutes dc, reconnect, que number 4000+
