It goes on sale different times depending on platform. On PC you can take a look at both Steam and their website version, which aren't compatible with each other. If you own a PS4, a PS5 or an Xbox Series you can also look there. While Windows (website) and Steam aren't compatible with each other, your progress will be the same on all other platforms, provided you buy it on each platform.

To be quite honest, the only singular advantage of the PC version are mods and third party tools, which are technically not allowed to be used anyways. If you don't care about those and you own a console, there is virtually no differences between the two, maybe aside that it is a bit more difficult to get an MMO mouse to work on a console, if you want to use those.

The main benefit of buying games on PC, imo, is that you keep them across generations.

Like I could not put a PS3 game into a PS5 and have any hope that it would play it. However, I can easily play Steam games that I bought 3 GPUs ago on my current setup.

I bought the game on PS3 and I got it for free on PS5 because of it. You do keep it cross-generation.

I'm not talking about games in general, I am solely talking about FFXIV.

Common consensus seems to be that it goes on sale more on the SE website than it does on Steam -- here, it generally goes on sale with the major sales-ish. So next will be the summer sale (maybe?).

check mogstation, they put steam version and non-steam version on sales at different times for some reason

the starter edition doesnt go on sale only the complete edition, you should wait until dawntrail comes out so that it is included in the complete edition or you will have to pay an extra $40 for it

(or just buy the standard edition now and pre order dawntrail, it comes with all previous expansions including endwalker so you will be paying the exact same amount anyway)

I would buy the Starter Edition now (never goes on sale) and then get Dawntrail as it includes everything, though you will need to wait until the 2nd of July to gain access to Shadowbringers and Endwalker content.

It's on sale right now through FFXIV website but the sale isn't on steam some for reason. It's $25 (CAD) for basegame and all expansion.

Honestly, if you want to play, play the free trial until dawntrail.

Even if you got it on sale now, which, i personally don't advise, you might as well just purchase the dawn trail complete edition when it releases fully. On top of saving $5 overall ($25 for EW complete + $40 for Dawntrail) you can just spend $60 for dawntrail complete and will net you the same result for $5, while leveling in the trial for free

Not sure tbh, FFXIV has literally the worst account site I have ever experienced. The fact that you need to buy it on the SE store then have to wait 5-10 minutes to get your CD Key then use that Key through the MogStation is so dumb. Nothing is centralized with this company or game it's typical Japanese Dev nonsense.
