Dawntrail Registration Error?
Hey, I tried to look up information but I'm at a loss, sorry if this is a repeat thread I tried to double check. So a friend bought me the Pre-order code and sent the code to me via text. I tried to use it and got the strangest error saying that it couldn't verify if I had purchased FFXIV via steam, which made no sense. I tried clearing my cache.. and trying again same error.
I filed a ticket, talked to customer service and I had to verify my Square ID and even on their end everything checked out and the code is a working code so.. it seems like it's Steam side.I even went as far as to show a screenshot of the game being in my Steam library to confirm I indeed had a legit copy. I never had this happen and nobody seems to know what to do. Anyone else have this issue? What can be done?

Also, I hope your friend is not playing FFXIV on his own steam account because you only get ONE code for every accounts. So if he gift you his, he cannot buy DT anymore on his own account. Basically. But yes, the DT license code (for Mog) won't work yet.

Hello and thank you for replying! He purchased the expansion for me so the code he gave me was for the expansion. I don't recall if his copy is a Steam or Windows.. I just know it was rather peculiar that when I tried to register on mogstation I got the error saying that it couldn't verify me having the game on Library which made little sense because we had to link our accounts to our SquareEnix ID, which I had done and I am currently running the game via my steam. Talking to Square customer support they said this was a rare thing and they did all they could on their side so I was hoping someone here may know what to do.

But you own the game on steam, right? Now, I seem to remember I waited until release before my endwalker code worked. (On the first day or early access or something). But the pre-order bonus code DOES work. (When you pre-purchase the DLC, you get both)

It's something you should look into. If the dlc is in your library, right click and check CD keys. (No idea why it's named CD keys but yeah). You should have 2 codes for Dawn Trail.
I have owned FFXIV since ARR via Steam and have purchased each expansion from ARR to Endwalker. I hadn't purchased DT for myself yet but my friend bought it for me as a birthday present and sent me the code to register the expansion via text on my phone. So DT doesn't show up at all on my Library or my Square Account because the code itself gives me the error. I know it's so weird. I never had that issue before.

To add to this, if the friend bought it through Steam and gifted you the expansion at the time it was purchased. You should have got a notification of the pending gift; and upon accepting it, it would have been added to your library. THEN you could apply the pre-order bonus code to the SE account.

if the friend had to text you the code, something tells me it's not the Steam version of the expansion.

You should be able to login to your MogStation account (SE ID linked to your Steam) and select your Steam version FFXIV account, then select "Enter Expansion Registration Code", put the code in, it should work.

The region must match, if your friend is in the USA and bought the DLC, and you are in the EU, then you cannot use the code. Both of your Steam accounts need to be within the same region.

The code won't work if you have yet to link your Steam account.

Also as mentioned, ask your friend who text you the code, if they bought the Steam version of the DLC, as it must be a Steam version, not the one from the SE store or 3rd party Windows PC version, it has to be a Steam version, bought from Steam or a Steam CD key, and it must also be for YOUR region, not theirs, this is region locked to NA/EU/JP.

Thank you guys for all of the feedback, to answer a few questions, he said that he purchased the code through Steam but sent the key to me on phone, not directly gifted through Steam which.. MIGHT be the issue (I am unsure but it's leaning to that).
When talking to Square Support they said that it is indeed a working valid for a steam user. I tried registering on my mogstation and got the error.. and just out of curiosity (desperation) I tried to enter the product key on my steam library and got an invalid message, possibly because the code I got while being for Steam can only be used on Mogstation since it starts with "R"... I am at my wits.. and yes we are both American players and have always registered my steam and ffxiv as American and so is the code so.. this is just a bizarre set of circumstances. I appreciate everyone who has commented.

I see, then it is because the CD key isn't attached to a Steam account, yet.
Hence the error (Unable to verify Steam account).

I would ask your friend to login to the Steam account they bought it on, check if it is "as a gift" status, then attempt to gift the CD key / Game DLC to you via the gift options which I suspect require you to be on their Friend list.

Ah yes, I rechecked, Have them click on the DLC (use website or app for Steam) and select you from the list to receive the DLC.
Depending on how your friend bought it, they may need to ask support to help, as normally, you select: Add to cart > select person to receive game or DLC from list > purchase item > it is automatically sent to the person they selected at check out.
