Usually when people talk about MMOs and XIV is in the talk. People see it as MMORPG or RPGMMO.
There is a term called JRPG and that genre does feature a vastly different game design from most western RPG titles.
But FFXIV for the most part is sharing the same fundamentals of WoW and even YoshiP admitting too that without WoW, ARR wouldn't have even happened.

Some people did refer to Japanese MMOs as grind heavy MMO but then you have Korean MMOs doing so i.e BDO, Lost Ark. then western MMOs like Everquest, Runescape (OSRS, no clue about RS3).
I think is the fact that way more people play FFXIV now than it was in early HW days and also a different demographic came into the game.
so people came in with different expectations (both from their own games but also how much the community hypes about ShB and EW 6.0 stories).
