Like a good example of this is the conjured weapons in the Elder Scrolls. Another good example would be the Spirit Sword that Kuwabara uses in Yuyu Hakusho.
Basically, they are squishy mage, then basically summon a golem around their own body to become super tanky, and summon a sword made out of fire, axe made out of stone, a spear made out of lightning, etc. to fight up close and personal.
I wouldn't be surprised if they added a magical tank like Runefencer in 8.0, but it would likely just be another build/spend job with its equivalent to fell cleave/primal rend having a spell animation like PLD's holy spirit/confit. It would have to use the same stats and fending gear that the other tanks use because it needs to fit the rigid gearing system. That's just how the game works. Most jobs are effectively just reskins of the other jobs within the same role, with mostly directly equivalent skills.
The combat design in XIV is very strict and rigid compared to something like ESO. There isn't a great deal of flexibility within the roles.
I can only see casters complaining about getting another competition xD
