Look... your logic might have flaws. You might as well include all the costs of console. Well Xbox players first need to buy the console every time they release new generation. Then buy Xbox game pass and then a sub to FF14+ DLCs and also a new controler each time they rage quit.
Fal is right. If you have Xbox, you have game pass anyway. Its too good for new game releases to not have that subscription. Is it lame that its behind sub ? Maybe. But that sub gives you access to online games anyway. I doubt there will be many Xbox players that play singleplayer games only and now that FF14 comes out, decides to finally start playing online.
Also. Free Trail will not require game pass to play on Xbox (and obviously no FF14 sub). Only Full Release so Endwalker/DawnTrail. Its MS policy to have online paid games behind GP and thats how it is. Could they have a better deal ? Like Xbox ultimate MMO Game Pass, that is cheaper than 2 subs combined ? Yes, they can make anything. But SE and MS don't have the healthiest history, so I guess none of them were willing to strike a better deal for players.
Those that already have Xbox and game pass will not cry about it. Only those that heard about it and felt offended. Yes PS treats players nicely, but it is also a Japanese company like SE. They have a long successful history of working together. Se made them a lot of money with exclusives so no wonder they are more open to the idea of not having FF14 behind sub there.
I'm willing to believe my logic is flawed.
But after reading your comment, I will say the same thing I said earlier: it's fallacious to imply that every single owner of an Xbox has GP, a paid service, and unwise to found the entire argument on that. Those people exist; you can look up last reported sales of Xbox Ones and the amount of subscribers in GP, and the former outweighs the latter without even the consideration of PC players being added into the GP userbase. I would say that having Xbox without GamePass is a waste myself - peanut butter without jelly - but someone could not want GP for any number of reasons.
If it was a complimentary service or free with the purchase of a One X, sure, yours and Fal's point that it's not a big deal because people have GP anyway would hold more water, but it's not, therefore it doesn't.
I do think the free trial will be the best bet for getting new Xbox blood into the game; only a fool would sign up for a the second subscription you'll pay on Xbox on a whim, tbh. And if they can make it through ARR or, better yet, to SB, it'd be worth it then.
I'm not aware of any inter-corpo politics or cultures, but ultimately, the (Xbox) consumer is getting stiffed.
"In June 2023, during an ID@Xbox presentation at the Best International Games (BIG) Festival in Brazil, Microsoft revealed that over 21 million Xbox Series consoles have been sold worldwide."
And when it comes to amount of subs Xbox Game pass had in 2023. Im finding mixed numbers. Between 25mil (statista.com) and 33.3 mil (ign.com)
“Our forecast estimates total Xbox Game Pass subscriptions (excluding Core/Live Gold) to be at 33.3 million at the end of 2023, which represents subscriber growth of just 13% - down from 15% in 2022" -IGN
So yeah... I would safely say that majority of Xbox series X/S players do have Xbox gamepass. Obviously they are not sharing which platform dominates. But its safe to say its Xbox...
Which means ??? Majority of Xbox Players have a sub and they would pay it anyway. Doesn't matter if its on gamepass or not. If people wouldn't point it out. Nobody would care tbh. Its not like FF14 gonna get millions of actual new players. Nah, most of them are veterans that want to play again and use this release as an excuse for alt account/ just come back.
I don't mind being wrong. I haven't had an Xbox of my own since the 360, so it's not like I especially care what Xbox has been up to the last few years, so I used the wrong generation name in my comment. God forbid, lol.
Honestly, even if I had been saying Xbox original, it still wouldn't change how unsensible it is to found your entire argument on an assumption about everyone having GP. If you want to hold a belief based on assumption and things you literally cannot confirm, more power to you... I guess, lol
Tell you what: if you can confirm to me that every last soul with an Xbox has GamePass, you win, you and Fal are right and its a complete nonissue. If you can't - and I fully expect you can't - well, an unstoppable force has met an immovable object. My position is that Xbox having to pay two subs sucks, and the idea that "who cares, they play Xbox they have GP anyway" is extremely narrow.
Further conjecture really does no favors. Whoever the majority new (or old) population may be, there's gonna be someone out there who buys the Xbox edition of FF on Amazon, sets up his account, rolls his subscription, and finds out he needs to ALSO pay for GamePass. That's the person that gets boned hardest.
1. You didn't use just the wrong generation name. You said "you can look up last reported sales of Xbox Ones and the amount of subscribers in GP and the former outweighs the latter without even the consideration of PC players being added into the GP userbase" and I did... 58 million sold units... which yeah... it does outweight... tho you are comparing nearly a decade of sold units of old generation (many probably broke across the years) to a monthly sub... Which has nothing to do with current generation and sub ammount. After using correct data the amount of subs and consoles out there does somewhat align.... Making your point absolutely incorrect.
2. It makes all the difference using correct naming. Now by saying "it really doesn't matter" you just show your ignorance to the data I presented.
3. Never claimed that everyone with Xbox has Xbox game pass. I said majority of players have game pass. Majority does not equal to everyone. It means more than half. Usually the voting power ?? You know ?? Obviously there will always be a person that doesn't have a sub. Those that only play singleplayer... But they are minority, minority that I doubt will pick up online game just because FF14 finally comes out... Why design for minority. When majority gives you profit ?
4. Yeah... reading difficulty is not exclusive to console. On steam forum you have thousands of threads asking same thing " Where is my cdkey ?" "Why is registration so difficult". etc. If they can't read or do basic research, game is really not for them. Its on them that they waste money, especially when everything is clearly described..
5. Anyway, all of your arguments depend on minority and minority of minority... those are cases 1 in a million. You are really stretching your targeted research audience, its actually crazy. Can you find a substantional amount of Xbox players that will pick up Xbox game pass after FF14 drops ? Can you find idk 3k-4k ? Or you just trying to apply really low chance of experimental theory to practical use ? Facts are majority have Xbox game pass and facts are they are the targeted audience. Whether its ethical or not. Doesn't really matter when players vote with wallets and by paying they agree.
