FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

Can ninjas tank in this like they can in FFXI? And is Paladin any good?
As the title states, can ninjas tank and is the paladin class any good I never hear talk about paladin.

Nah Ninjas are pure DPS in this game. Also the jobs in this game have been streamlined where you can just leave the tanking to the actual tank jobs and just focus on your rotation (and fight specific mechs) as DPS.

They're alright. Had some weird openers and off meta rotation at the start of the expansion which lead to certain region's party finder groups blocking them for that.

Since then they had their much needed rework and now shares the same streamlined rotations like the other tanks from a general(casual) point of view and fits the 2 min meta now. Pally mains have generally then returned back and they had minor dmg buffs every other patch thus far.

well yeah but if i level as a warrior first then my paladin gets bonus EXP and has all the dungeons unlocked and better gear to swap to
WAR is about as braindead easy and boring as PLD
oh. are the early tank options just boring in FFXIV?

Correct, but DRK and GNB a little more complex. DRK is more about the opener though, and gets pretty braindead boring after it. GNB takes a lot more effort and skill to optimize than the others.

Boring's not the idea. Early levels are intentionally limited to ease newer players into the basics of tanking. Telling the tank 'weave no mercy on your 60s GCD and hit the continuation rough divide double weave cheesedick' is a recipe for getting tanxiety sufferers to turn Amish. However, the effect is that when sync'd back down to lower levels, there are glaring holes in your toolkit that you later rely on to deal damage and survive. So the effect is indeed 'boring', but if you're new to tanking, having only a few abilities to muck up with instead of a whole job's worth is probably a godsend.

On the subject of 'levelling one job first for another', that's absolutely intentional. Bring one or two jobs up to max via MSQ, and you'll get what is known as an armoury bonus, then use your daily roulettes and, as I mentioned before, spamming the highest level levelling (i.e. a dungeon that doesn't reward tomes/has an entry level that doesn't end in a 0) dungeon the class you're trying to level has access to and you'll speed through levels.
