In real life though, kinda necessary
Restricted to one personal house per character. However, an Apartment is recommended as they do not expire if you unsubscribe for forty five days or more-like personal houses do, and you automatically gain access to the chocobo stables and mogmail NPC at the building, teleport included.
Owning a house requires a constant sub payment. If you don't enter your house within 2 weeks I think it is, it gets marked to be auto demolished.
Apartments however you can keep as long as you want I believe. You pay the 500k gil fee and it's yours, So if you're worried about your sub status, go for an apartment. If you don't have 500k someone might be nice and give it to you, it's literal couch change to some people.
If you do want an apartment though and you don't have 500k, don't worry. It seems like a lot early game, but at end-game with all daily roulette, retainers etc etc you get that gil FAST.
Never bothered past 1st chocobo quest as they are just annoying have a minion if you want a follower. And there is never an instance in the game where you cant tank something on your own
Chocobo is actually very helpful to new people, especially glass cannons. Having a pet healer running along with you can save you a few deaths. Also a decent damage add if your a solo healer that well help speed things up. Found a use for it healing with duo dps teams with no healer doing higher fates and such.
Otherwise you only need a house/apartment to avoid the shame of being a globe trotting hero who lives in a Hotel.
