If everyone listed their items the same price as yours, your item still might not sell because the game will display every listing in a certain order and you still might not be at the top of the list. The only way to ensure that is to do 1 gil under.
Now for all you crazy psychos who go 10,000 or more undercut every time... Unless you know the item is super overpriced and you're trying to restore proper pricing (It's very needed sometimes) going by more than 1 gil just loses yourself money as your item would sell just as fast. But I know not everyone cares about how much they make.
I should add that by listing an item 1gil under, in some cases, can help you identify if a bot is selling. There are many times where I will list an item cheaper and see 1 minute later I've been undercut, go back and adjust my price, and the same thing by the same person. Doesn't mater what time of day I did the adjustment, 1 min later that same retainer is selling for less than me. So once I decided to really tank my pricing (2 million original, down to 300,000) and sure enough, the other person instantly adjusted for cheaper than I listed. I bought their item and resold it with mine at a much higher amount!
I will sell first, i don't care about the price.
Once I'm not selling mine, sell for whatever you like.
I'm right.
Then dump it on one of the vendors if you're just trying to purge it all and not make a profit.
Pretty much what i do. :)
Apparently you have not worked retail nor have much conception of Supply and Demand. Consumers generally want to spend/pay as little as possible. Most people on the MB are of the same mind. Instant Gratification, and the lowest price for the amount they need. It is as simple as that.
All I do is use weekly scrips to buy gravel and flip "emperors new" glamour items from a vendor, all I care about is that I can sell them faster than my supply routine takes.
If I play the stupid price gouging game, I won't sell much and I will just have a retainer full of gravel with more each week, I would rather sell 30x5000 for 150k than sell 2x20000 for 40k
It's just basic supply and demand, i'll sell the items for as low as my own opinion values them, everyone elses opinion on what I should be doing is worthless to me, I decide what my time is worth.
