FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

What to buy?
FF XIV is pretty much the only MMORPG now that's left for me which I haven't played yet and since there's literally nothing else at the moment except RuneSape to keep my attention - I decided to give this game a try, but I'm not sure what bundle to buy. I'm afraid I'm not gonna like a game so I'm afraid to buy the complete edition of the game. Is complete edition of the game needed for me to try the game out and understand if I will enjoy it or base game which costs £9.99 is enough? Also am I right to assume first month of the membership is free?

The trial linked above is a good test.
That or the trial off the square enix site.
https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com

Which would give you more options for your account, since se accounts and steam accounts can't mix.
You can go from a se trial to a steam account, but not a steam trial to a se account.

If you decide to buy in to the game later, you will have to make all expansion purchases from whichever storefront your account is tied to.

Steam accounts have the option of paying with the steam wallet on the mogstation for their subscription.
There's also the extra authentication there, such that if the steam services are down they can't authenticate to allow you to log in to the game launcher to play.

The trial itself contains the base game od a realm reborn, and the first expansion heavensward.
Content up to level 60.

But has social restrictions such as trade, some chat channels, etc to curb exploitation by bad actors such as rmt.

Always do the free trial first.

The base game, aka "FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Starter Edition" will include everything in the free trial.

This, aka FINAL FANTASY XIV Online - Complete Edition will contain everything after the free trial.

Next, you need to understand, if you do the free trial on steam, you are locked in. Your credentials will save to the steam launcher version, and its a pain to get it removed, though possible. I recommend only buying on steam if you plan to purchase the endwalker edition on steam as well AND continue your character from the trial.

Otherwise, I would look into the SQE version here: https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/na/

Remember, SQE version and Steam version ARE NOT cross compatible. Whichever you get, youre in that ecosystem, and that includes future DLCs. You cannot purchase the SQE Retail copy, and use the Steam endwalker DLCs. The codes that you register on mogstation will lock you in and cannot be used interchangably.

Mogstore purchases, or optional content from the online store, are not platform dependent.
