That or the trial off the square enix site.

Which would give you more options for your account, since se accounts and steam accounts can't mix.
You can go from a se trial to a steam account, but not a steam trial to a se account.
If you decide to buy in to the game later, you will have to make all expansion purchases from whichever storefront your account is tied to.
Steam accounts have the option of paying with the steam wallet on the mogstation for their subscription.
There's also the extra authentication there, such that if the steam services are down they can't authenticate to allow you to log in to the game launcher to play.
The trial itself contains the base game od a realm reborn, and the first expansion heavensward.
Content up to level 60.

Always do the free trial first.
The base game, aka "FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Starter Edition" will include everything in the free trial.

Next, you need to understand, if you do the free trial on steam, you are locked in. Your credentials will save to the steam launcher version, and its a pain to get it removed, though possible. I recommend only buying on steam if you plan to purchase the endwalker edition on steam as well AND continue your character from the trial.
Otherwise, I would look into the SQE version here: https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/na/
Remember, SQE version and Steam version ARE NOT cross compatible. Whichever you get, youre in that ecosystem, and that includes future DLCs. You cannot purchase the SQE Retail copy, and use the Steam endwalker DLCs. The codes that you register on mogstation will lock you in and cannot be used interchangably.
Mogstore purchases, or optional content from the online store, are not platform dependent.
