For me it was Shadowbringers where the whole story started to be good.
Heavensward and Stormblood i only really liked SOME parts of the story with some characters but most of them was a Borefest for me.
But like the above said, it is completely subjective. If you don't typically enjoy jrpg plots, you won't like this one either.
Yes thats ARR.
Its horrible almost nobody likes it.
Its suuuuper long with tooo many filler.
it gets better as you progress the story/expansions Don't worry about it.
Shadowbringers and Endwalker are Waaaaaaay above them when it comes to quality Story telling and characters.
Mostly only watch the Voiced Dialogue... most of the not voiced parts in the MSQ is just blablabla that you know or will know anyway.
when you start to like it.
other then that will many peoples just tell you "survive ARR" xD.
Yeah thats not how it works XD
I find the MSQ boring and lackluster in every sense of the word. It’s predictable, has major pacing issues, and consistently employees what I call ‘downturns’ in the action to drag out the content a bit longer.
A downturn is when they make you do something extremely silly that’s part of the MSQ but is only tied to the main story by the flimsiest of threads.
Aka, weeding an old ladies garden because she has information you need to stop the destruction of all the realms.
Chasing a cat person who wants to be the new mayor as he ‘connects with the people’.
Capturing a ‘grizzled mouse’ simply so an NPC can tell you the same crap you already knew.
It’s tiresome. There are high points in that story, but you have to slog through countless hours of garbage to get to them. It doesn’t help that, and this is my opinion, the supporting cast is the worst I’ve experienced in a FF game. I don’t connect with any of them and they always seem to make the dumbest choices out of our available options. But you HAVE to do it. Everything is tied to the MSQ.
My playtime nosedives anytime they add MSQ stuff, because it’s a chore for me. I still haven’t finished Endwalker. I can only do a quest or two before the infantile writing drives me away.
But in my mind, the rest of the game makes it worth it. The dungeons, raids, music, class system, they all combine to create the best MMORPG currently out.
But don’t be like me. If you haven’t gotten into the story by Heavensward, just realize it’s not going to get better. I kept hoping for more and it always ended in disappointment. So I look at the other major positives of the game which keeps me excited about the title.
I've played almost every MMORPG under the sun at this point. From Asheron's Call, to SWG, to WoW, to GW2 and even obscure titles like Sword of Legends/Secret World/Tera.
Fetch quests are part of all of them, but very few do story content extensively. But even looking at the ones that do (ESO, SWTOR, GW2) their stories are far more engaging and immersive than FF14's is.
But it's all personal taste in the end. We all like different things. I just wish the community didn't push so much on the story stuff. Because the quality of this game is incredible, but for a pretty significant group the MSQ is a chore. Most responses I see when someone dislikes the story are in the vibe of 'it's not for you' or 'go play something else'.
I think that cheapens all the other great things about the title. The actual game play, raids, dungeons, the music, the community. The game is insanely good even if you find the story lackluster. It was just disappointing as hell to me that I kept looking for that hook from the story and it never came (the third act of Shadowbringers was the closest it came, because that was dope as hell). But then I had to chase the cat mayor....
That's why people recommend you find something else to play when you complain about the story.
