Make sure to do job quests. They are different to MSQ, but they unlock new skills, alter/update others. Ishard will be fun for you. I got really immersed with the world as dragoon there.
Don't give up tho. ARR ( A Realm Reborn) despite their changes to improve it. Is still relatively exhausting experience. The game really becomes better at Heavensward both from Story and Mechanic point of view.
However if you look for combat as in PVP in Endgame. Its not where the game shines. PVE is where the game shines.
Haven't played Swtor in years. However wow is something I did. I do agree with you. Combat in FF14 at the start is slow. WoW is much faster to introduce skills and auto attack there actually does decent damage and works in-between skills in some cases. Maybe thats why it feels so slow, because FF14 focuses on skill damage, rather than damage delt by auto attack. Since we get skills slower, the combat also feels slower.
Tho it feels really rewarding when you finally get enough of them and kinda feel the growth of your character. Remember that you don't have to stay with your class for ever. Anytime you can change it and start leveling something else if you truly think its too exhausting for you.
Yeah at level 12 you have just a few skills unlocked. So it will feel pretty slow. Once you hit level 70 or so you have a lot more skills unlocked. You'll be weaving abilities in between your main combos more similar to the level 90 rotations. It will feel a lot more active then.
Later on, you'll get spells that aren't on the GCD and it will be more like what you're used to. When you get those spells varies between classes, tho.
It will always feel a little floaty.
